Smersh is Russian for "Death to Spies" and was the name of a set of counterintelligence agencies formed in the Soviet Army during World War II. Their mission was to secure the rear of the active Red Army by arresting traitors, deserters, spies and criminal cells. As captain of the 4th department of Smersh, it is your job to execute these operations in the heart of enemy territory. Be prepared to complete various tasks, including stealing important documents, eliminating enemy officers, kidnapping high-ranking officials, and sabotaging enemy plans.

Its got a wierd collision bug when trying it on nvidia Geforce GTX 980 that makes it unplayable, lucky i have an older AMD card and a newer RTX card that it runs great on, anyway its hard as hell but the dev console exist just add godmode and unlited ammo and have fun blasting nazis, who want to sneak around if you can be the RUSBO (the famous cccp rambo).
I consider myself an experienced gamer, I like games to be challenging so I always play games at a higher difficulty level than the standard: DO NOT DO IT WITH THIS GAME!
I started a new game at HARD difficulty, which is not even the highest available, and it's simply too hard to be fun.
Mission 1 was difficult but doable, yet with extensive quick saving/loading.
Mission 2 was extremely difficuly and I had to randomly try sequences to check if it was working or not. Which kills all the fun.
I got halfway through Mission 3 and quit playing as this is not something I enjoy.
Stealth becomes almost useless and you find yourself just walking and costantly focusing on the map to try to avoid the enemies that can spot you. And sometimes this is not an option and you have to kill (noiselessly) all the enemies in an area and avoid others to discover the body.
Maybe i will give it another try in the future with a lower difficutly level, because otherwise the game is not bad at all and it didn't suffer from all the bugs other reported. The atmosphere is good and also the graphics are OK for a 13-year old game.
Also, i'm giving it 3 stars because I paid it 0,89 € :)
I'm giving this game a lot of chances, actually I'm still trying to have fun with it. The reason why I write before I'm finished with it is simply that right now bugs are eliminating every chance this game has to catch me.
I experience a lot of cliffing bugs, where I'm stuck in an invisible wall and move at a minimum rate. Also sometimes the camera changes, so that I don't see the game over the shoulders of my charakter, but from the side. While the latter might be innoative stuff, I doubt that it is intended and it makes it close to impossible to seriously plas this game.
Admittedly I never even finished the tutorial or the first mission, due to constantly encountering those bugs. I'm gonna keep trying to play this game and if I actually manage to play it I will propably update this review.
This game would net two stars for at least being a stealth action game, and trying something slightly different despite ultimately being a Hitman clone (the red loading bar makes it feel like stolen code,) but after a few purple screens of death and other computer-crashing bugs, I'm convinced that giving it one star is a kindness.
Here's the good; it's a stealth game that usually works, and just butters every level with so many guards that it's hard to slowly mass murder your way through. It often forces you to consider a completely quiet, non-violent approach. The levels are big for its time, and afford a lot of exploration.
And that's it. After that, the game is amazingly bland in how few options are available in dispatching your target. Kill, avoid, run, get into a shootout and die horribly while the cursor twitches around wildly. The second game had less crashes and a few semi-scripted assassination methods, and is much more playable for that simple addition. The exploration is open, but the execution is so close to binary that it doesn't much matter.
Death to Spies feels like it was rushed. It would be easy to compare this to playing a beta version, verging on an alpha. It works... a lot of the time. But that doesn't mean it plays.
