This game is very short, you'll finish it in about 4 hours or so. The visuals and atmosphere are amazing and it will look good even on a low end pc.
The gameplay is enjoyable and satisfying but the controls are not great especially during the hectic movements. The platforming aspect of the game is decent and the puzzles are easy to solve. But sometimes its hard to discern the background from the main obstacles.
The plot is ..interesting, you can get an alternate ending when you play on nightmare mode which unlocks after your first playthrough.
Overall, a short, good looking game.
Beautiful art and backdrops. Really evocative.A stunning amount of work went into the detail.
Horrible controls in the action sections towards the end, and very short. If I didn't get it for free during a givewaway, I would ask for my money back. A severe disappointment.
I grew up playing action platformers like Prince of Persia and Flashback that clearly inspired this game, but sadly Deadlight is too bland and straightforward compared to these classics. I played with K+M and the controls are stiff and awkward, often with delays while movement or attack animations finish (bad for this type of game) or bugs (pressing down to drop off a fence caused me to turn around the sides of the fence numerous times). It has various types of levels (run/dodge gauntlets, shooting, puzzle solving) but nothing was too challenging. Most of the challenge and frustration was a byproduct of the buggy/bad controls when platforming. I read through the journal pages quickly and got around 4 hours of game time.
The story is only average zombie survival, nothing too innovative. By the way aside from a brief, distant glimpse of the Space Needle this city looks nothing like Seattle, especially in the 80's. They should have at least looked at some pictures! The writing is OK but the final part is overly dramatic, a bit cringey to be honest.
I think the studio was new when they made this game, so it's OK. Get this game on sale only :)
As other reviews have stated, this game has some nice looking aesthetics, but it's spoiled by very average, frustrating and forgettable gameplay.
+The main character is actually fairly well developed and has an interesting backstory which is supplemented by missing diary pages which you find, that reveal missing parts to the story. I found this mechanic to be interesting and kept me wanting to play through the game.
-However, the rest of the story seems quite boring and generic. The other characters really aren't developed enough and overall the actual events of the game are forgettable and not that interesting.
-Main issue I had: Controls are unresponsive and clunky. I played with a keyboard rather than controller so not sure if this had something to do with it.
- I had two gamebreaking bugs where I had to restart the game, one of which was in the final chapter of the game.
- The levels in the game are forgettable and frustrating at times. There weren't realy any levels that stuck out as memorable.
-The zombies aren't really that much of a trouble as I'd hoped they would be. There aren't enough games that make zombies an actual threat, and this isn't one of them. Ammo is limited but you're rarely faced with a situation where zombies are the actual problem, it seems like the environment itself or clunky controls are more of a difficulty than the zombies.
-Music is barely there and really lackluster.
+Voice acting is actually decent apart from a few characters.
+Sound effects are just okay.
This game, obviously derived directly from Max Payne and Walking Dead, provides a fun and atmospheric world that is unfortunately negated significantly by a terrible and awkward story, unremarkable characters, and unironic voice acting that reaches new lows of low. I found the game enjoyable but also wondered if it was worth my time as I played it. I would suggest it as an easy sidescroller for those wanting to pass the time, but for those looking for a true challenge, perhaps pass on this one.
