Best Z Apocalypse Survival Simulator

I see many outdated build reviews on here. Take a look at the change logs and you'll see that Double Bear have fixed just about everything and have even added a lot of content. Dead State is a survival simulator. Don't go in expecting Dead Rising or Dead Island. Do go in expecting the most deep and atmospheric zombie apocalypse survival game, ever. PROS - Dev (Double Bear) seem to work hard to update via feedback - Excellent detailed locations, oozing atmosphere - Great characters and event writing from the writer and designer of Vampire - Masqurade: Bloodlines (if you didn't like that game, there's something wrong with you!) - It's huge! - Plays similar to XCOM but with zombies! - Very dark and plays on what can really happen during such an apocalypse (undead threat, unfriendly survivors and fellow team mates that can turn or crack CONS - A tad too long (I clocked over 100hrs) but Double Bear have filled it out with extra content since my completion Personally, I'm seeing one too many 'how will you die' simulators around, now. It's great to play one that not only asks 'how will you survive' but tells the tale incredibly well.

Lost Potential and Diminishing Returns

I remember when Brian Mitsoda first announced that he was making Dead State, and it seemed like a master stroke. We could finally play through the long-term, slow-burn survival horror of a collapsing world as an RPG. But I’ve put about 100 hours into Dead State, 20 of them post-revamp, and while that original idea still thrills when I think about it, this isn’t a realization of it. There are a few things holding it back: 1) The engine. Torque 3D was free and familiar to the programmers, but it is ugly and, worse, incredibly unoptimized, unplayable on hardware that makes contemporary Unity games sing. Camera navigation and animations are janky. The UI is painful to navigate. 2) The design. Scout and scavenge during the day, while the stronghold is built and maintained. But there’s a catastrophic flaw – your character must ALWAYS be at the head of the scouting party. Utility skills outside of combat are wasted, with narrow exceptions (like leadership). If you have a base addition that needs 9 mechanics, and your character is the only person with the know-how to get it made, you must necessarily forgo scavenging for at least a day, which is a really punishing sacrifice. Some tasks are impossible without player investment you can't give. Don’t bother deviating from combat-focused characters. 3) There are so many characters (presumably to account for permadeath) that writing is spread out among them and they lack depth and voice. These are normal people, but the weight of the apocalypse rarely registers beyond stats, and it saps the premise of its horror. 4) Combat. Simple, poorly balanced, but above all unavoidable and constant. There are bright spots that keep you going – some of the environmental storytelling is compelling, the mythology as it unfolds is interesting, the world is believably savage. I often want to play this because there is SO MUCH potential in it and its ideas, but it's just poorly made and falls far short of what it could be. It makes me sad.

5 star zombie strategy game.

At first I did not understand you can move anywhere on the map and not just known locations, once I figured that out the whole game opened up. This is a very cool zombie strategy game, from weapons to characters to item creation this is pretty refined game, I had no problems on windows 7, the game ran perfect and I even liked the story.

Want to love it, but so many bugs....

Love the style, love the gamplay, love the consept but its drowning in bugs... I normally don't mind playing buggy games, as long as they are playable I dont let it ruin my fun. I have been playing for two days, and do realy want to love it, al the good parts are ther, but the amount of bugs are to much... Things og missing from the inventory, after/during playing through an area vital items have gone missing. Save games suddenly all became "incompatible" forcing me to start frome scratch. Because I really do want to play the game, and I will, after the next updates.....

5 stars niche game but...

...Not for everyone. Some would rate it poorly. Getting to the point, worst parts: -Graphics are not the strong suit. -Crashes sometimes. -Its a rinse and repeat game. Good parts -Tactical rpg combat, not complicated/hard (like Dungeon Rats or Age of Decadence) but not simplistic (like Suikoden I and II) -Zombie survival apocalyptic setting. -You have to manage your shelter, build upgrades, dealing with survivors, recruiting people (or not). -You have to scavenge everyday, collect all kind of food, fuel and supplies to keep your people not unhappy. It can be hard...and fun. Surprises guaranteed. Wont spoil them. I will just say that one of my playthroughs ended abruptly when one of my fellow survivors shot my character dead because of shelter -very- low morale. After 30 ingame days some would get mad at it, but I could not do other than laugh, clap my hands and start a new game. You know enough, if interested, pick it up on sale.
