Wait until they fix it

I've been looking forward to Dead State. Decidedly I avoided any news about the game beyond the basics so I could find the game fresh and new. Sadly, i've been disappointed. Firstly, bugs. Lots of them. LOTS of them. Oy vey. I am a person who tries to do work arounds for bugs, or avoid them, etc. But there are just too many in the game that make me repeatedly have to reload or just stop playing in frustration. Secondly. Combat is dull. Very dull. No cover. Only standing; no sitting, kneeling, or prone(unless you've been knocked down). No shooting around corners. Guns have such a short range you're basically shooting at each other from 15 feet away IN THE OPEN. Very little randomness to locations. Same ones each game. Dialogue is repetitive. Characters are cliches. Random annoyance, who ever decided on the dialogue...you do not need to beat us over the head, yes we get that Anita was a truck driver and it made her tough. You do not need to tell us this repeatedly. The game progresses slowly, but in a good meandering. I'm talking play hours, not in game days. The stats used are decent. However you are only able to go scavenging if your first character, who you are in the game, is assigned to the scavenging party. As well since you become the leader you have to take points in negotiation and/or leadership. Meaning if you play a big bruiser or a fast marksman you're going to have a lot harder time in the game. This restricts a player from trying a variety of roles for different play throughs.

Worth Getting For Any Zombie Fan

Dead State is unique in the field of zombie games. Where most simply set you out into a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies and challenge you with wading through them, here you are tasked with surviving. More of a zombie survival sim, your responsibilities go beyond just trying to get through the zombies. You must survive. This makes the game unique, challenging, and a wonderful change for the genre. You start out as the survivor of a plane crash and you now find yourself at a school in Texas. Eventually, you are made the leader for a small group of people there and it becomes your job to build the school into a livable shelter and to help people with their problems. Dead State is all about decision making. Sure, there's combat and you will have to go out and find supplies and other survivors. But the important aspects of the game come with having to decide what you should do. Should you fix the well first and get clean water or do you build a garden to get food? Do you give a survivor extra rations when they desperately need it or do you keep from doing this because the entire group needs them? Do you go scavenge for fuel or for food? You have a lot of decisions to make and not everyone is going to be happy with your decisions. Additionally, you must upgrade the school to become a long term shelter as help just doesn't seem like it will arrive. Gameplay on maps is similar to the original Fallout Tactics, with an isometric view and turn based combat. Here, you can have a team of four and you can equip all four with various weapons, armor, and items. There are several options during combat and you will find yourself facing a variety of enemies beyond just zombies. Overall, Dead State is worth the purchase. It's a fun, challenging, and different kind of zombie game. If you're looking for something unique in the zombie sub genre of games, then look no further.

I'm sorry she died. it wasn't my fault!

Her mother was really angry and upset with me when I returned and she discovered that her daughter was dead. "It wasn't my fault! ******** Looters shot her twice with a gun before we could do anything to stop it! I barely escaped alive!" I protested. "I don't care!" she cried running off. I did not sleep well that night... You find yourself as a survivor helping a very small band of people survive a zombie nightmare that`s taken place while you were unconscous after a plane crash. Everyone`s nervy, depressed, not sure what`s going on and are obviously at shatter point. While it`s not expressedly said, you find yourself almost reluctantly having to take the lead in organising a safe home (the school) by setting off out to nearby towns and scavenging for protection and food, etc. Very 'The Walking dead' stuff. Choose who to take with you on your sojourns with real consequences. I took a Police Officer and a young animal Vet (now human medic) with me, taking whatever fighting items we could. It wasn`t until we approached the first town that it dawned on me to see if the cop had a gun- He does! However, as you may have guessed, it`s often better NOT to use loud shouty weapons cos that attracts the zombies and bullets are scarce. So most of the time we had knifes, spanners, hammers as our weapons, saving any guns for emergency use. I found going wide around corners, rather than passing right by was a good plan as any zombies you'll see with plenty of time to act. You can turn the corner into a gang of zombies if you're not careful. I tended to go round the back to buildings rather than front which works well. However, one door was locked and I tried breaking in. This attracted 3 zombie cops, which we despatched, but not without some pain. The fighting is turn based once combat starts and uses Action points for what you can do. Personally I love this system as it allows clear tactical planning. The zombies are relatively short-sighted and can be quite easily taken out. It`s the Looters that spoil my day. They don't seem to care about making noise, and if they have a pistol they'll use it. I lost one man because I did not expect this (as guns hurt- alot) and then my medic was killed too. It takes AP to switch from knives to guns... Back at the school base, the medic`s mother was really upset and moral plummetted with everyone for losing 2 people. There`s a lot of base management and allocating who does what in repairs and improvements and there are many more places to explore. I have only just begun. If you make a custom character it seems important to have a good repair skill since I couldn't fix the fence even with all the collected items (or maybe I was missing something). Graphics are good and functional. A little more standing and fighting animation would be nice. What I would like to see improved: Sounds are too few. You don`t hear any speech except for the odd groan. For instance, zombies don't make much noise at all- come on let's hear a zombie GROAN! I can understand speech is a lot of work, but more incidental sounds and noises need to be added for a scarier atmosphere especially when scavenging. Music is almost nonexistent, but I guess I can put on my own. If there were more atmospheric sounds it wouldn't matter so much. AI needs a little extra work. When a Looter (not zombie) had shot one of my companions and he lay 'KO' ed, the Looter insisted on killing off the unconscous guy even though there were two of us still battering him over the head! Like all that mattered was killing the guy because he had the lowest health! That's illogical. He should have ignored the 'KO'ed guy to concentrate on the other threats still standing and fighting. Only after every one's down would you continue to attack them on the floor. Path finding can get a little screwy with your followers walking in circles and thru eachother sometimes. Hopefully will be fixed. A little dissappointed that initial people you meet don't change with a new game. They're always the same; looks like it should, would add freshness to each new start. However, things seem slightly more randomised when exploring- Needs more. Anyway, i played this game for about 4 hours before coming here and enjoyed it a lot. Good game. 4 stars- I can only see it getting better! Now to my new start.

Much better now

6 months after release and most of the bugs are fixed, and what's left are mostly just annoyances, if not for the bugs it'd be a five star rating and one of the best zombie apocalypse games ever. Still at this point I'd recommend getting it when GOG or Steam have it on sale, it's not worth $30, not yet.

Buggy

Got the steam-version. Love the game. Love the concept. Love playing it. But.. the bugs! There are just too many. I don't even know if I can finish the game because I can't seem to give "special items" the characters want (read the guide how to give - doesn't work - just another bug). Memory dump crashes. Crashes when I try to access the cementer y SW of Splendid. Rendering issues with low fps (1 fps) when using the lowest lighting option. Plays great when using low, normal or high tough. Is there any music ingame? Haven't heard any. Can't use my hardware driver, using the optionally one. This is another Wasteland 2. Great game but occasionally unplayable because of the bugs. Please fix them as fast as possible. 2/5 for now. If the get fix the bugs it'll be 5/5.
