Almost perfect... but almost makes a difference

I bought this game as I loved Freelancer first. Freelancer had its ups & downs and I didn't expect Darkstar to be waaaay better. It would be nice however to replicate what was good in Freelancer and avoid the flaws. This was ALMOST accomplished. The good: Darkstar looks better that Freelancer. The galaxy looks less goomy - it's more colorfull & even... optimistic :). User interface is more friendly and simply nicer, more polished. Steering is (I fly on keyboard + mouse) similar to Freelancer, but thanks to some minor improvements - better. Trading is simpler - also thanks to better organized information on the GUI. Dogfights are fast & look great. The ambivalent: There is only one ship... Yes You can upgrade it much like You would in a RPG game, but in my opinion this simply becomes boring. Saving money for a beautiful, new ship is a must in such games (IMHO). There is also quite limited number of weapon choices. Weapon have grades (standard, military, elite), but You basically fly with the same type of guns from the very beginning. This is not fun. Freelancer got it better. The bad: There is not much to explore really... In Freelancer each system had its secrets. A secret pirate base, a secret station, a secret wormhole to another system, a secret shipwreck with some goodies... In Darkstar the only secret You get a secret pirate hideout.... which is visible on Your target list. Yes... that IS very secret... Travel system is also somewhat boring. In Darkstar You only have normal speed (+thruster) and a hyperspace jump. In Freelancer You had normal speed (+ thruster), cruise speed, tradelanes and finally - hyperspace jumps. This solution also meant that there was actually a point in traveling around a system, discovering all it has to offer. In Darkstar - each system has basically the same - a trade station, a research station (you rarely can dock to it) and... that it. Occasionally You get pirate hideouts or giant asteroids (with an artifact in them). Nevertheless - not much to explore. All in all - Darkstar is a good game. It will give You good fun a couple of hours, while following the storyline. Maybe You will depart from the storyline for a minute to do some trading or fighting with pirates, but as it's boring in the long run - You will return to the storyline. I would love a mixture of Darkstar and Freelancer. perhaps with something more, like the ability to land on planets (not via docking rings, which suck ;) ). At the price GOG sells it - Darkstar is a great but though.

Not the best space game around

Darkstar One is enjoyable, has a good soundtrack, has good graphics, some competent voiceacting and generally gets the job done. However, unfortunately it falls short in almost every other field: 1) weapon customisation almost feels like getting linear upgrades 2) ship upgrades are linear and boring at that, so are the Plasma Cannon upgrades going alongside those 3) every system is, mechanically, the same. You get 300 copy-paste systems, only varying with small aesthetic details, to visit, where 30 well-defined ones would've been much better. 4) the plot isn't especially riveting, and isn't very well structured 5) side missions tend to be very same-y 6) the game doesn't really support any other style of playing than a gun-totting mercenary. Trade is a chore and the game doesn't give you enough info on it to make it worthwhile. So yeah, if you've got no other game to try out, you might want to grab this when its on sale. But generally nothing to write home about, and too much of it to boot. The game's shortcomings could've been forgivable if it was 10 hours long, but its probably at least twice that long.

Absolutely boring, waste of time.

Have you ever made scrumbled eggs, put the fresh eggs into a glass / bowl before putting it in the frying pan, accidentally dropped a piece of small eggshell into the glass / bowl and tried to fish it with a spoon / your fingers? Yep, this game's aiming mechanics are as awesome as this adventure and you will constantly do this while "fighting" in this game. - This whole game is like Descent. Only without all the fun, without any good mechanics, without great guns, without action and (re)playability after the first 30 minutes or so. Learning curve is so steep it could be described as a vertical take-off. Nothing is explained, like trading or all the other stuff that's going on. Upgrading is a joke. Had a simple pew-pew-laser to start with. Not if that wouldn't be horribly boring enough yet, the upgraded MK2 laser looks exactly the same, fires exactly the same, everything same. This game is so lame and boring it's an major insult. It's like the creators didn't even want to make a de(s)cent game. Why can't we just have game like Descent, Forsaken, Aquanox, that isn't major garbage? WHY? Is it *that* hard, godammnit? - And all the "fighting" is like hunting a fly in a supersized hall with a broomstick and trying to poke it gently to death. BORING. AS. HELL. Don't buy this game.

All the RPG Space SIM sins

This could have been a good game, however, the scaling difficulty as you upgrade your ships causes sudden and abrubpt difficulty spikes, muptile grind style gate ways block your advance, The story is very weak, the variety of enemies is slim, your tactical HUD places all the important tactical information at the corners of your display instead of towards the center so you can see it without having to look away from your target, and this is just the start. Honestly their are better space sims and you should save your monet for those.

A space sim I refuse to stop playing!

If I have one complaint about this game, it's that there's nothing to complain about, lol. Every aspect I can think of in this game is great. If you don't own this game yet, I strongly recommend it, it's got great gameplay and graphics.
