Nice old game
It's a nice old game unfortunately it does not work really well under windows requires a couple of quirks that potentially worsen the overall system security by a lot, it would be nice if it gets into the Good old Games category so GOG can handle this issue.

Hungry for more space sims....
I am a huge fan of a dead genre. Darkstar is good enough to satisfy some of those old school space sim cravings, plenty of solid action and a large variety of mission types to take part in. The dogfighting is genuinely fun, the controls and interface comfortable. If you want, you can be knee deep in combat with a cool looking, powerful ship in no time at all. Just so you know, I was a huge fan of series like Freespace, Colony Wars, G-Police and the original pc release of Crimson Skies. These were story based, action intensive dogfighting sims on both consoles and pc's. Most of them were also military and team based shooters, so I'm less into the mercenary approach. In addition I'm not so into the super specialized, economic oriented sims that trickle out of developers these days. Unfortunately I got into the genre too late for Wing Commander and X-Wing, but if anyone made a sequel to any of those series, I'd be more than a little excited. Given my tastes, the relative lack of competition, and the GOG pricetag Darkstar one is a very good game of a style I sincerely want to see more of. It might suffer in comparison to one of my old time favorites, but as things stand its an exciting and fun game to play.

It's not Freelancer but...
it's the next best thing. That doesn't really say much, but as Freelancer is pretty hard to get a hold of, and the likes of Star Citizen are a fair way off being released, this is probably the 'best of the rest'. The good: It has a decent story, good voice acting, and the ship upgrade system is pretty innovative. The combat system is good, and there's a nice selection of weapon types. The bad: you can't change ship, so once your ship is fully upgraded (roughly by the end of the storyline) there's really not much to do or work towards. While the upgrades can make your ship more specialized (some variations may have more hardpoints, or a bigger cargo bay etc) ultimately it's still more or less a multirole ship, so you can't play as a bulk freighter or a racer etc. Conclusion: If you can get this on special, it's worth a buy as the story will give you a few fun hours. If you can find a copy of Freelancer though your much better off playing that.
