Description
In 2455 A.D. , Kage Hishima used the magical powers of the Daikatana, the most powerful sword ever forged, to alter time and establish himself as supreme ruler. You are Hiro Miyamoto, one of the few people on Earth who remembers what really happened. The burden of saving the world, your version of it, has fallen unto your shoulders. You’re not alone as your friends, Superfly Johnson and Mikiko Ebihara, travel by your side. You must gather weapons, overcome all obstacles, discover deviously concealed secrets, and battle a bewildering array of foes. Use your resources wisely as you’ll need all the help you can get. Are You Ready?!

From the rock star designer, John Romero, comes the legendary, in more ways than one, Daikatana (“long sword” in Japanese). Run ‘n’ gun is the norm here as you blast your enemies to oblivion with over 24 glorious, bad ass weapons. On top of the sweet, sweet guns, you are armed with the Daikatana--a weapon that grows in power the more you use it. Go on a wild time-tripping ride and make your enemies “Suck It Down!”

  • Wreak temporal havoc in 4 distinct time periods: ancient Greece, medieval Norway, near-future San Francisco, and high-tech Japan in 2455.
  • Incredible sidekicks as they provide cover fire, watch your back, and provide helpful feedback to assist you in your mission.
  • Pulse-pounding multiplayer action with two equally exciting modes of play: classic Deathmatch and Jewel Quest, a variant of capture the flag.

Throwback Thursday Recommendation

We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!

Recommended by Kilg0re, Stream Team: Daikatana is an underrated game in my opinion, that has an undeserved reputation for being a "bad" game. Though it certainly has it's janky issues, and there were many issues on release, there is a lot of fun to be had here. IMO, once you get past the drab, grindy opening episode (which is the one most people played in the shareware demo), the game really opens up in terms of graphics and level design. The John Romero approved community patch makes it much more playable on modern PCs, and I think even if it's not a bona fide masterpiece, when all is said and done, it's an ambitious fun experience.

In one word-Mediocre

I had played this on a home port *Nintendo 64* and liked it, however upon playing the first few levels I remembered the things I didn't like about this game. The first few levels are byfar the worst, and I would argue most boring *Come on, who really wants to shoot frogs, alligators, and mosquitoes in a swamp* The thing that irks me so much about this game is the savegems. I like games like Deus Ex where I can save whenever I please. This game, you'd be lucky if you can save conveniently. The graphics aren't awful but obviously look dated. I also get annoyed by the quit menu, this game reminds me of an arrogant person who claims to be the greatest thing in the world. When you manage to get past the crappy first part the game gets a little better. It is worth a play or two but it just feels subpar after playing certain games *Blood, Deus Ex, Serious Sam*

Ahhh, memories

I fondly remember the excitement when this very trailer came out. It made the game look amazing. Vision, potential, fresh new ideas and even vaguely realistic character animation! Then I played the demo. Long. Drawn out. Frustrating. And completely blanketed in green. I bothered to finish the first level once. Never again. Consider this more a review of the demo and the trailer, but as far as I've heard elsewhere that's all you really need to play. Maybe I'll try the full thing someday. But no time soon.

So bad, it's almost good

Tried to finally play this infamous game after 20 years with an open mind. It sure looked interesting, even in 2000. But, even with the unofficial 1.3 patch, this is still a bad game with irritating bugs, like when saving: Chances were that 4 out of 5 saves were "corrupted" and could not be used. Let's go into it in more detail: The AI does not work properly. Level design is abysmal, with the slight exception of Ancient Greece. With abysmal level design come some really bad puzzles, the worst of them being finding teeny-tiny switches in really bizarre locations. Graphics are ok (I'm being generous here, but I really like this style). The weapons feel strange and underpowered. The movement of the player-character, Hiro, also feels somewhat strange. Controlling the sidekicks and levelling up the stats of the player-character is so not self-explanatory. This is horrid, even by 90s' standards. The game is full of cheap instant-death traps. I didn't mind them too much, but when 4 out of 5 saves are corrupted, this can become a problem. The story is as bad as it can be and I liked it. The dialogue between characters is cringeworthy. Halfway through playing, I started playing Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight and Soldier of Fortune. Within the first minutes, I noticed something Daikatana thoroughly was lacking: fun. But, apart from Ancient Greece, there was no fun to be had at all in Daikatana. How this game back in the day scored an average 75 out of 100 is beyond my understanding. I can say this for Daikatana: It has (really bad) character. And at least I can now say that I've played through and completed Daikatana. Hey, that's something.

Not as bad as you would think

C´mon guys, don´t spread that hate. Daikatana is good game after all. It´s just not by far as good as John Romero promised. But if you ignore that absolutely insane hate (mostly from people who have never played this game) you may find action game with great story, beautiful locations and original feeling.

World Renowned For Being Terrible!

I would play this if you just really wanted to see where it all went wrong. This game offers little more than something to satisfy curiosity.
