Lets be honest, if its not for the hype built up around this game, it will definitely be received with critical acclaim. We have too high an expectation and even more so after the many delays of the game, thinking that they have ironed out all the imperfections considering the delay time. But it is not to be, as evident by the console consumers' backlash (and unfortunately forms the biggest fraction of total consumers).
But i am sure that the game will be better in time. This is the same for witcher 3, where framerate was an issue. After the update, the game is considerably better. This shall be the same for cyberpunk.
Hey, loving it!
The presentation is simply fantastic. Both the visuals, and the audio. The technical achievement on the audio, damn, the game just sounds amazing. Can't stress that enough.
Does my game run flawllessly? Nah, far from it, but my 1070 is way below the capabillities of the new consoles, and that's on me. I still play at 55-60fps on 1080p and that's more than I hoped for. I don't mind that I'm on min-med settings because the game still looks breathtaking.
Some negative, though: The quests are enjoyable, sidequests as well, if you read what's up, read the shards and immerse yourself in a quest from start to finish without getting distracted... but the game is structured in such a way that it's very hard for people to actually do that. Like, on your way to step 2 in a quest you might get a call about a new quest, that's just RIGHT there... so, why not do it? Saves coming back here later. So you do it, and then do you get back to that quest? Or do something else, and get another call? Basically you end up with lots of parts of quests that you forget why you should care about them because you did the first stages maybe hours ago... then it's just driving from A to B, shooting dudes, rinse and repeat. Hollow and lacking depth.
If the game could give NOT throw quests in your face all day, and instead things did like: Going to or calling fixers to get gigs, checking into a notice-board equivalent to populate ?'s, listening in on police chatter to populate crime quests, etc. That would add depth, and exploration. If that was how you got your quests, and map markers, you could explore and only take on what you wanna take on and at your own pace.
As for targeting 30fps for the specs and not saying so: I always thought it was 30, thought it was obvious, so I'm not marking down for that.
So yeah, 4 stars. Marked down for the spoonfed quest system that spams your questlog and hampers exploration.
Game is lots of fun, even though i never play singleplayer games i really wanted to try it out!
open world is amazing with a lot to do!
The only problem right now are the bugs and the optimization.
if they can fix that with upcomming bugs the game will have so much potential!
Give them some time and the game will be a masterpiece!
This is not my final review, I haven't finished the game yet and I'm exploring the various sub-quests and parts of Night City, so I will update it as the time and patches come.
The good:
- Stunning visuals and graphic
- Incredibly built city and environments
- Awesome weapons
- Great story
- Plenty of nice references to The Matrix, Blade Runner, Deus Ex, Watch_Dogs, Terminator and more
- Photo mode is quite cool, and I mean it!
- A nice mix between RPG and FPS (even if apparently lot of people disagree about this)
- Lot of unexpected events in the story
The bad:
- Most of the NPCs talk without even moving their lips...why?
- Character creation doesn't really let you customize your character: it's based on presets, most of them quite ugly, why would I ever want to customize my D but I can't for example customize body structure? When you're done with character creation you can't change it later on, not even a bit...
- Can't customize controls and the choice of some keys is really not for the best.
- Once you've installed a mod on some weapons apparently it can't be removed.
- If you throw a knife at an enemy you'll lose it.
- Often you'll see things to be looted but no way to reach them (e.g. case behind the counter on Konpeki Plaza, briefcase inside the aircraft on top of Konpeki Plaza)
- Sometimes characters following you will lock you inside rooms with no way to escape (happened with Dum-Dum, had to reload the game.
- Mirror is bugged
- In some areas cars just drive into concrete for no reason, seems like the AI drives them on a misaligned street path, this is particularly the case in street below the great roundabout near Arasaka Tower, beneath the Petrochem building.
Once CDPR will fix the issues, the game will get a 5 stars rating, it's just bad that we waited so long hoping it would have been more polished but it wasn't.
If you rate 1-2 stars it means you just don't see how BIG and AWESOME this game is, because face it, it is!
