For a title this long in development the game unfortunately feels rushed, unfinished and that a game release in 2020 does not have quality of life features like key remapping is just not right.
And lets not talk about the VERY long list of game breaking and not game breaking mods. Be aware that you are paying full price for a game in something akin to advanced beta state. If you can get it to run at all that is. I have little doubt that it could be a great game down the line after a lot of patches but right now I would recommend you to wait for maybe another 6 months before picking this up.
I really wanted to like the game and my trust in CD Project Red is deeply shaken by how they clearly released the game in not the state they said it is. I mean this is EA level lying. I am very disapointed and I whish I had not preordered it.
Q
Leaving bugs aside for now. There's a lot to this game, I'll try to unpack my thoughts after finishing nearly everything and 100 hours of play. It's fun running around, hacking and customising your character. If you stick to moving between the objective markers on your map, it feels pretty satisfying. Though outside that, NC is uninteractable with.
The writing is pretty poor. Characters feel one dimensional, and/or emotionless. There are one or two exceptions, but it's not great. As someone who pores over entries in terminals in Fallout, etc, the equivalent here were huge blocks of text and I quickly stopped reading them.
The driving is bad. It has the issue that I am not using a mechanical keyboard, so the throttle is always full on, but the gps window is too small to make the turns, the cars all handle pretty poorly and the driver AI is bad. Not to mention the horrible pop in you get with cars appearing from nowhere at high speeds and 2D sprites of traffic fading like a mirage making it hard to plan where to position yourself.
The gunplay is okay. It's servicable. headshots are satisfying. The enemy AI is the standard stand and shoot dumb AI in many games. Hacking is fun when it works, but I'm pretty sure it's a little buggy at the moment and will get better. Most of the time avoiding combat is more fun than engaging.
Leveling is pretty good, there are a decent amount of options, though I feel too much of the game requires a high body stat.
Conversation options are lazy, uninspired and have almost no real choice. Rarely does anything your character says matter at all.
The story is okay, kinda short and a bit unsatisfying, but the main issue with it are the cutscenes. They are just bad, feeling like a long slog and a waste of your time as they make you slowly walk in an empty hallway or listen to a boring, unskippable monologue.
I had fun, but I love this setting, if I didn't, I'm not sure I would have invested as much time as I have.
..that I waited so long for this... thing of a game.
!!! Could contain minor spoilers!!!
I liked the setup and the music - that’s it.
I totally liked NOT:
-There wasn't a minute without glitches an bugs, I'm not joking
-Music was just used in the clubs, some Johnny missions and the last mission, why? The music department did a great job, but you used it to create 1% atmosphere?
-The UI is crap and so overcomplicated I cannot understand why this got through internal testing
-So is the driving..
-So is the NPC AI, it is just sad
-Much logic/plot errors like Judy: “I love you, come back to earth asap” V: “Ok I will leave but die soon” Judy: “Ok I break up with you, cya!”
At the end I was just hard for me to finish this game, had no fun.
Just play Prey(2017) if you want to get a look on a great “Open World”ish “RPG”ish shooter with the possibility of choice.
Positives:
+ Side jobs are great
+ Combat is great and varied
+ Missions have lots of variety in approach
+ Keanu is much better than I expected
+ Music, Graphics, general presentation is amazing.
Average:
~ Main story is awesome(+), but feels incomplete and too short(-)
~ Some characters are great like in Witcher 3 (+), but some are forced, or shallow due to the cut/non-existant prologue (-).
~ Choices matter (+), but not too often (-)
Negatives:
- Roaming gameplay is a bit pointless. Driving feels bad, except bikes. Very little interactivity with the open world.
- Unfinished, buggy police system
- Left in discarded mechanics (underwater +oxygen on items for example, when there is barely anything underwater).
- Some meaningless mechanics. Perks that don't matter, street cred seems pointless after the first few hours.
- Clearly lots of great ideas that were cut, but not in a smoothed out way.
- Life paths dont matter at all outside some slight dialogue changes and the first 30 minutes of the game. Story always goes the same direction regardless of life path. I remember one encounter that let me get an easy solution because I was a nomad.
- Bugs, but they can be fixed.
If you are fine with terrible AI and bad animation glitches, then this is the perfect game. I will wait a year and try to play it. Maybe it will be finished by then.
