Broken & not that great.

No real decision making that alters the story whatsoever. NPC clusters are lifeless and boring, the city feels desolate compared to what they showed time ago, you can't go into buildings.. They lied about overall functionality of the game. The game is completely broken too, the missions often do not trigger and you're forced to go back or reload the entire program. I don't even feel like writing up a full review.. Go read the other reviews people have written, disregard any and all positive reviews considering they come from the same people who would tell you they loved a can of coke just because the commercial told them to like it. I did not enjoy this, the release is extremely unacceptable. Do not support CPR, they treat their employees like crap as well, go read about it and let go of any idea the internet gave to you that they are a "good employer" or any kind of example of good morals. Refunded.

Refunded after 20 minutes

Hi. I don't often write reviews, but since so many are saying the game is amazing I thought I'd add a note of warning. Despite my enduring love for the Witcher series (I will forgive a lot just because of Triss) I ended up requesting a refund after only 20 minutes. My first impressions of the game, backed up by reading others' reviews that weren't by fanboys and/or dick jokes, told me that the well-publicised bugs are irrelevant, it's the game that is the problem. In a very sad 20 minutes I realised the following: 1. You can't change the obnoxious nature of your character, just what colour they are and what combination of breasts and genitalia they have. 2, This is no RPG, as you have no effective choices to make - you are reading a script, not acting a role. The dialogue countdown timer (a la witcher 3) is now a choice between saying what your moronic character is scripted to say or...silence. 3. Driving is a joke, even with the horrific motion blur turned off it's like steering a bison on an ice rink. 4. There is no context to what you are doing, no exposition of why, and you have no idea who these different people are that you are forced to deal with. 5. You can't remap movement keys. Yes, I know I haven't finished the prologue. I don't care. If it can't get the opening sequence right, and the basics are so poor, what hope is there for the rest? Initially, I thought I would just leave the game in my library until patches sorted both the bugs and gameplay out, but realised that would just be rewarding those who delivered perhaps the most crushing disappointment in gaming since Daikatana, which I think is still worse than ME:Andromeda. Both CDPR and the appalling "games journalists" who gave this game perfect scores pre-release need to be sent a very clear message of how let down some of us feel. I'm quite pleased to be a very small part of that message.

Extremely rough and buggy release

Now, this is a new one for me. I'd usually rate this 4/5 stars, stating how while it does a lot and can be extremely impressive, it bit off more than it could chew and tries too many things which leads to it underdelivering on half its systems. What works is an extremely impressive immersive sim about being a random no-gooder in a cyberpunk city that ends up in a middle of a few weird plots. The city in particular bears mention because while the simulation flip-flops between perfect and inexistent, the visual splendor cannot be overstated and really sets the bar for this type of setting. Plus, overall the places are well done, varied, and provide good atmosphere. Other amazing elements include much of the writing and - in particular - the voice acting, which elevates many otherwise pedestrian scenes to a very high level of emotional impact. So yeah, it's not a 5/5, but it is a really really good game for a 15-20 hour romp through the city and maybe another few hours spent on a few interesting side quests even if many of the less prominent ones openly show how they are just padding. Like I said, not 5/5, but easily 4/5. Then... come the bugs. Oh wow. Between constant t-poses, randomly disappearing NPCs / items / cars / doors / whatever, the parade of weird AI behavior about NPCs walking into/through walls, cars randomly crashing into things, NPCs being stuck in a short loop, weird combat AI, inexistent stealth-combat AI, weird combat animations that constantly bug out, the game looks and feels *extremely* unfinished to play. Plus on top of that, the performance is terrible even on good PCs. Sure the game is visually impressive, but it's not halfway impressive enough to warrant how it runs. So yeah, I'd say "Wait". Hard wait, too. Get the GOTY edition in a year or two.

Disappointed.

Up until the release date, the game was hyped up like crazy and the promotional material from CDPR was showing something quite different from what the game is actually like. It really pains me to put 3 stars after I played The Witcher 3 and absolutely loved it, to then come to this and feel kinda meh about it. I bought The Witcher 3 twice, once on Steam and again on GOG because it was the $h%&. I can't phathom the fact that CDPR was actively stopping reviewers from getting PS4/Xbox One versions and/or publishing gameplay videos recorded on those platforms. Even though the PC version is better in comparison, still I can't turn a blind eye to shady practices like this and more light needs to be shed on this topic. CDPR, you disappointed us when we actually not only had faith in you as a result of TW3, we also liked you for all of the positive interaction with the community and it seems you turned into another Ubisoft which is really sad.

Unstable mess

This game needs a lot of work. The biggest issue by far (as we are all here on PC) is the stability of the game. I can play for about 1.5 hours before the game crashes. It does this every single time I play. There hasn't been a game session that has lasted longer than 3 hours for me (and that was REALLY laggy. To the point where I could barely walk straight in game). Then the display driver will inevitably crash, and I'll have to close the game, retart it, and try again. This by itself wouldn't be as bad as it is but the game ALSO crashes the display drivers about 4/5 times on the logo/warning screen upon startup. This is on top of the normal (ha! "Normal") crashes to desktop that occur once every 5-6 hours or so that don't involve the drivers taking a dump. Add to that the bugs. Then add the weird UI choices (vehicles for sale only have pictures in messages, not in the journal where the missions to buy them are, mousing over a target shows EITHER the info OR options for hacking, having to sell/drop useless food items one by one, etc etc). The gameplay loop itself is fun, and the story is fine. Not all of it is great (some characters are written poorly, some options in conversations make no sense for the character, etc), but a majority of the game underneith all the terribleness is a lot of fun. The saddest part is that in about 6 months, this game MIGHT be worth playing. This is a very disappointing release, and I didn't actually have my expectations set too high. Avoid for now at all costs! It will make your hair turn grey.
