Really. I thought it will be a great dissapointment. That was what I expected and what I was ready for. I definitely wasn't ready for the masterpiece I've received. To be clear - I know the game have A LOT of weak points: crowd AI, cars, minimap, some glitches. But still. Main story, side plots, contracts, characters, characters-relations, complexity of locations... I can point to more and more. This is the only single-player game, that I've been playing for so long - almost 185 hours. I've finished all of the quests, I've seen all the endings. I don't regret preorder, I would buy this game again.
I'm on PC and I really enjoy this game (84 hours at the time of this writing). I didn't start playing until patch 1.04 was released so I missed most of the bugs.
The issues that don't affect my rating:
1) Driving is a bit messy on keyboard/mouse, especially with the higher-end vehicles as hitting the 'w' key causes the car the peel out and if you have to hit left or right as you accelerate, you can easily begin fish-tailing. Seems like it was designed for a controller with smooth acceleration capabilities.
2) The gear. There are a lot of different looks you can have for your character but if you want good gear you have to skip 95% of what's available so you really don't have the ability to customize your outfit. It seems unfortunate that the devs designed so much variety but it basically all either gets sold or broken down for parts.
3) It's insanely easy. Very early on hard/very hard it has a few challenging parts but once you start getting lvl 20+, the game, even on very hard, becomes very easy. Later on I stopped having to really try at all, I just walk in and kill people without ever having to worry about my health. At high levels you almost become god-like.
Why 4 stars:
Outside the main story, there is very little depth. I love the npc's, they are all well-written and a few npc's have quest lines but because the quests are spread out in game over time, it seems more like the same person hires you a few different times. There's no time to get invested in their stories. I would have loved to see more in-depth side stories, even if some of the one-offs had to be dropped. Quality of quantity. As it stands now, you can just run from job to job, one after another, killing and/or stealing then moving on to the next, it feels more like a day job, making deliveries (of death), instead of going on an adventure.
What's good:
Basically everything not listed above. If the side-quest world was more fleshed out, this game would be amazing.
Cyberpunk 2077 is inherently a difficult game to review, but with over 200 hours played, and everything in the game cleared, I feel I can make an assesment. The most important thing I can say about this game is that despite the bugs, which are numerous, I continuously had an amazing time playing.
The easiest way to judge a game is by how it looks, so I'll start there. In almost all instances, Cyberpunk 2077 is stunning. I have my settings between medium and high, RT off, and HDR on at 1440p and this game is the next step up in terms of visuals.
Next, let's talk about the soundtrack. Just like the visuals, the soundtrack is nothing short of spectacular. The ambient tracks are amazing, and the radio is incredible. Nothing more to say.
Gameplay is a much more difficult thing to review. At it's core, Cyberpunk 2077 is an RPG looter shooter cut from the same cloth as Borderlands. The gunplay is solid, but never becomes exceptional. This is a shame because it will be the bulk of gameplay for most playstyles. However, working within the roleplaying systems set up you can easily elavate the gameplay. Hacking mechanics and stealth add great depth to nearly every engagment, and the levels and areas are layed out in a fashion that makes it clear stealth was not an after thought. You will also be doing a lot of driving. Driving is, at best, alright.
Now to the story and characters. To put it simply, I believe Cyberpunk 2077 delivers. The plot is good, and acts as the solid foundation for the characters and themes that drive a compelling narrative. This level of quality and writting is evident in nearly every activity in the game, not just the main story. Some of the most compelling narrative experiences were completley optional. Everywhere you look, you are surrounded by phenominal character writting, and some of the best world building put into a game, bar none. There is no weak link in the Cyberpunk story or world, and to me, THAT is immersion.
Despite the bugs 5/5
I like my games with story. I didn't have expectations on what this game should be, and I went on the ride with the game and it was fun. I played at launch, IDK what the game is like now with the 1.5 update but everyone says the game runs better.
