Just finished a first playthrough and can with confidence say that despite the negativity and nit picking the experience is worth every minute. A truly amazing achievement and one of my new favourite RPG's.
First, I'm not going to talk/rant about any bugs or performance issues here. That topic has already been covered countless times and there's enough salt in the wound. Luckily I'm one of the godchosen people to be sparred from gamebreaking bugs.
Graphics/Sound:
The game looks beautiful (if you have a decent enough system) and the soundtrack is the cherry on top. One of the few things the community can agree on.
Story/Quests/Characters:
You chose one of 3 lifepath's for "V" (the protagonist): Nomad, Streetkid, Corpo. Depending on your choice you play an individual prologue with all three of them ultimately coming to the same first mission and main story. From here on you sometimes get specific dialouge options which, given, won't change the outcome of any conversation but you're always aware of your backround and it builds atmosphere. The story and the bigger sidemissions are beautifully written and so are all characters. If you let yourself sink into the game, it's just plain amazing to experience all these tales. There are a lot of generic sidequest (rob this, kill him, go there,....) as well, but every bigger RPG has those.
And to all of you saying "It's no RPG!": Your lifepath may have no impact but your decisions do. You decide who to kill/spare, who you romance/reject, how you roleplay dialogues, which ending you get and so on. If that's no roleplaying to you, I don't know what is.
Combat/Movement/Skillprogression:
Now this is where the flaws come from. Controls feel weird/clunky at first but nothing one can't ajust to and luckily modders took care of most remaining nuisances (double-tap on direction key to dash/dodge?!). Weaponfeeling and animations/sounds are top and the hacking is somewhat interesting and most attributes/perks are straight forward. The AI is pretty braindead and easy to handle (even at the highest difficulty). This makes the game kinda unattractive after the big quests for players that don't like to dwell in the lore of the world.
Paid around 50-60 bucks I think cannot remember, even with the slight issues, I can say it is amazing. Beat it once and now on my second playthough trying to do everything, finding every hidden quest, to item/car whatever, to achievement hunting. Even on my old system a seven year old core i7 4770k, 32gb of ram with an SSD and a GTX 1080 FTW2 I got four years ago on a 1440p display. Get about 30-70 FPS with an average of about 35-50 with the ez optimizer mod. I wish more of the features to cut content get put in, but honestly having fun, so much so I have dumped over 150 hours into this game. There has never been a game this open, without instanced interiors, with so many npcs, with so much going on, at this level of detail ever in Gaming in 3d. The world is easy to get lost in, the quest are fun, I hope they bring a lot more content to the table. With the negatives and they are really small even on launch day for me, game is amazing, not even the big AAA studios have ever pulled anything off this close. Not even Rock Star or Bethesda honestly.
My review of this game is that I went ahead and lossely redesigned quite a few parts of it.
