Interesting concept and execution

I quite enjoyed it. I like the art style, sounds and music were just fine. I had a few complaints about inventory management and it's got way more randomness than I like but overall it's not bad. On easy you can definitely beat the game in 4 or so hours. But as much as I don't like randomness, it definitely adds quite a bit of replayability. That makes me feel like it was money well spent, especially on sale. It's good but not great and definitely not fantastically amazing so I think it's a solid 3 stars.

Not perfect; good coffee break fun

May contain game play spoilers... The Curious Expedition sets you as a 19th century explorer racing to uncover a hidden, golden pyramid and other riches over the course of six expeditions. Each expedition rewards you with items and prestige by how you rank amongst your competitors. These items can be used to earn more points toward your overall rank or cash to be used to better equip your party for the next expedition. Your chosen adventurer comes with certain perks and weakness that will effect your gameplay. Maps are procedurally generated and combat is accomplished with a dice roll utilizing combat, strategy, and defensive dice. It is difficult to explain, but usually works. Review - I am enjoying The Curious Expedition, though, my party dies more than I succeed. The developers mention FTL as an influence, which is apparent. I must say that this game is easier to complete, but I think FTL provided a greater amount of strategy. I find that many events in The Curious Expedition are far too random. I often find myself triggering an event that leads to a "no win" scenario, which traps me on the map and forces me to die or deploy the balloon back to London. Other times, the golden pyramid is right next to the start, which makes the journey quite painless. Overall, the game is quite fun and even losing can be entertaining. I recommend the purchase.

Brilliant!

You get to play an explorer 'borrowing' artifacts to take back to THE museum, where they belong. Clearly. /s Intended or not, its a commentary that doesn't take itself too seriously with a bit of Cthulhu mythos thrown in to unbalance things even further. Love to play while catching up on vid playlists. Had all but one explorer unlocked, unfortunately lost all my progress, but I'm ok with doing it again.

Not very good at it

Some explanation is required here. I feel like I'm not getting what I should out of it. I get through the first expedition or two and run out of supplies, and even if I donate all my loot to the museum and get no funds for the next one I'm still barely making it against my competition. World 4 feels like I have just no chance to really succeed, and I'm just being chased around the map. So yes, there's some element of "git gud, scrub". But I also feel like there are just too many events over which I have no control even if I have the right gear. And you generally have the right gear only sometimes, meaning you probably lose something important or skip the chance at the rewards and just move on. The world tears you apart and leaves you unable to continue; as a simulator of wilderness expedition it's excellent in that regard. I'm just not good enough at it for it to be fun enough. I understand having no carryover to the next expedition. It's nice to think if I just do everything perfectly and get lucky I could beat the game on the first playthrough. It's also just really nice to have literally anything to show for it after a long game session. Still, I get that it's an artistic and design choice. People are gonna complain about how problematic the theme is. But it's a really good exploration of how disastrous European "contact" with indigenous people could be. We just get to float off on a hot air balloon and leave the apocalypse behind. The game isn't from their perspective; that would be a different game. But it doesn't whitewash how horrible it is for them. A comparison would be Spelunky. But, I really liked Spelunky. I was also good enough at it to beat it a couple times ;) So in all, I personally wouldn't have bought CE if I knew what I know now. Or maybe my opinion will change if I ever get the urge to fire it up again. But it's not because any element of the game, or the whole, is bad.

Can't wait for the sequel!

I'd descibe this game as a cross between Renowned Explorers, and Elder Sign. Fantastic roguelike, with lots of decisions to make. Quite a few random elements, but well worth the price of admission.
