Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
I bought this game back in 1999. I still own two copies on CD. I have it on my PIII system in my game room. But I'm now old and crippled, so I got a copy to play on my big projector screen in my living room. It's a terrible game. Sound effects are broken, textures are bad, the voice acting is weak and hilarious, the level designs are very lackluster, the controls aren't even that good- but, I enjoy it anyway. It's fun to play bad games.
I've played this game long ago (12 years I think). All I remember is that it was "go there, then go back, then go back where you came, than go back again..." kind of game. The other weird think is, that the story is not bad, but why the hell does it start by killing the final boss monster ?
But the most irritating issue is the control system. I'm not a native english speaker, so I can't express myself precisely, but in one word: Disaster ! Whoever implemented the jump system as it is, he should be punished forever.
As I mentioned earlier, the other "good" thing is the backtracking. And of course, on your way back, the once killed monsters are back too. Good for XP hunters, not for me.
Not worth the price, not worth your time, not worth anything. Sorry Com&m.
I bought this game thinking, hey a hack and slash game in the might and magic universe, what could go wrong? boy was I in for a surprise.
TL;DR terrible combat most of the game is travel from place to place and the story is almost nonexistent.
The Pros:
I'll start with the good stuff because there's less of it.
1. dialog is spoken, which is a feat even by today's standards, for most characters except for the monsters you meet later.
2. graphics are not bad considering the year it came out, and there's a mod for updated textures on moddb.
The Cons:
1. Terrible controls, this is mostly in combat, you have to aim with the mouse where to strike but there's no crosshair or something like that. this also applies to the platforming, which is annoying because of the semi tank controls that the game uses.
2. Getting around is rubbish, there's a map of the general world and it shows you which part of it you're in now, but that's about it. no mini-map, no local area map, and with the fog to cover the awful draw distance I had to use the old maze tactic of sticking to the right wall to get around.
3. Voices are badly acted, 'nuff said.
4. had a ton of technical issues with it, won't run on 1080 only on 1680x1050. and no music, so I had a choice between the annoying footsteps or silence.
5. most of the game is empty, and this is before oblivion gave us fast travel, so you have to repeat certain areas in order to return to the quest giver.
6. like older titles, this suffers from "guess what each thing does", or have a wiki open for every item you pick up. very immersion braking, and annoying.
7. it is not clear at all times where you need to go, so I had to look at a playthrough to finish some parts of the game because wandering around searching for stuff isn't fun.
those are the main issues, buy at your own peril.
This one really hasn't aged well. If you have a fond memory of Crusaders, let it stay fond and don't buy this game. If you haven't played it yet, there is no reason you should do so now. If you really have a craving for this kind of game, try spending some time with Rune.
I have heard of this game from the magazine about video games and looked promising to play and now after many years i've decided to play it right now and........the PC version is dull and boring.
Graphics: For a game released in 1999 the game looks pretty decent, however the animation is very stuff and sometimes you can see how it snaps to the 1st frame of it. It's pretty noticeable when you are running, just pay attention to Drake's left arm how it quickly snaps back. The maps are very large and linear but it's empty, you'd better stock up some Speed Potions to move faster.
Gameplay: The game contains some of the RPG elements, you gain experience by killing every enemy you encounter letting you to level up, but here's the issue here. The only thing that is increased is your HP, Mana and the Damage Modificator (responsible for dealing more damage) rest of the stats cannot be increased at all unless you wear some special items. In terms of combat each move differs depending on your movement and mouse input, if you keep attacking while standing still ya can perform a combo, moving up will do a leap attack, besides that you can defend yourself or even roll away from the attacks. The magic spells are very limited and are barely useful besides the fireball, torch or stone skin. Buying/Selling items is a joke as you can sell the same item for the same ammout of gold you've bought and the near end equipments just suck, might as well stick to the mid-game ones instead. The enemies in this game can be lame, in a game you'll be fighting skeletons most of the time which can do melee attacks, but wait there's a magical one that is transparent and casts lightning or a invisible one which can absorb your HP! There are other enemies but they are not interesting, also their AI is dumb
Audio: The strongest part here is the music and frickin Batman (Kevin Conroy) voicing our hero. The rest of the VAs sound more like a placeholder made by devs themselves and are not even that good.
