Game Industry Embarrassment

No story, no character, no substance, no reason for the game to exist. A total embarrassment to all things "Might and Magic." This game was the beginning of the end of 3DO. These are the words I heard in the halls and offices when I worked as a designer at The 3DO Company. Crusaders was supposed to be an Tomb Raider like adventure game that took place in the Might and Magic Universe. Sadly, that was not at all the end result. This game saw a 6 month development cycle and was pushed out by the stock holders. We level designers referred to this game as "Level Design Masturbation." I believe more money and time went into the design and size of the box than the game itself. This is a game where you can just run from the beginning to the end and win. NPC's, cut-scenes and quests all needless. No point. I also worked on Might and Magic 7 & 8, Heroes of Might and Magic 2,3 & 4. Crusaders was the absolute worst game I've ever played and was ever a part of. Don't waste your money.

A Fun M&M Experience...

This was one of my first RPG experiences I've ever had. Way back in 2000. It was a fun straightforward game that lead you to some interesting places.. I thought the story was generic but, served it's purpose as a video game's story. The character's are nothing too memerable, except for the dwarves. The weapons and armor give you a sense of progression as you strengthen Drake, and the magic is overpowered, especially the fireball spell, which makes the game fairly easy. Not the greatest game in the world, but it's a fun ride that takes you through dungeons, catacombs, forrests, and castles. I recommend at least one playthrough.

Yawn

I think two might be a bit harsh. The game was entertaining, but it was below average and three is average so I guess that gives me two. Crusaders is a very short action game that has little to do with the Might and Magic series proper. It does have two sequels, Warriors and Shifters (the last of which sounds like it was probably the best of the trilogy from reviews, but it was only for Playstation 2 so I missed it, maybe GOG will put up a port?) It lacks any RPG elements which is disappointing, but as a Hexen-style first person slicer, it's perfectly average. You run up to things and chop them with your sword, sometimes you stand back and magic them. See some pretty environments (for the time). And eventually the game ends. It is enjoyable, but there are better ways to spend your time.

Probably not worth your time.

In a way, I love this game. It provided my friends and I lots of laughs when I played it through back in college. But, let's be clear: a true Might and Magic game, this is not. There are really no tangible RPG elements. It's not party-based, but rather you follow your mute protagonist in fixed (and often broken) 3rd person perspective through the most linear landscape and game play conceivable. Indeed, for each location, whether in a cave or outside, your progress is consistently funneled from one straight corridor to the next. The voice acting provides comedy, as interns on Windows mics lazily plod through pointless dialog. Also, expect a lot of jump puzzles, which are only puzzling in their sheer magnitude, especially considering the imprecise controls that will lead to many deaths in bottomless pits. Finally, given the limited locales, expect to back track a lot. Indeed a better title for this might be, Marathon Runners of Might and Magic. By the end of the game I spent at least 75% of the time hiking my hero back and forth through the already tedious landscape, fighting the same monsters over and again. Don't waste your time on this one unless you want to get some laughs with your other geek buddies. Instead try one of the other great Might and Magic titles on GOG!

Not as bad as some people claims

If you only play the best of the best games, this is not a game for you. It is not a game of the year, so stay away from it. But, it is not as bad as some people claims, haters gonna hate. It is a fun action game. If you want to play some interesting adventure, try this.
