A survival horror game, where you’ll test yourself against puzzles and riddles as you investigate the eerie tranquility of the abandoned theme park. Don’t be deceived by the whimsical surroundings, something is awfully wrong in Crow Country.
As you unlock new areas, backtrack and discover more, you gradually piece together why Edward really shut down his park and where he mysteriously disappeared to. You’ve heard some pretty disturbing rumors, but they couldn’t possibly be true…..right?
For visitors to the park who are more interested in spotting crows and taking in the sights, Exploration Mode allows you to journey on without the fear of being attacked by the mysterious monsters roaming Crow Country. If you knew what those monsters really are…..
Just how far would someone go to follow their ambition? Are some sins too wicked for redemption?
A tale of reckless hubris and human greed, and now at the center of it all... you.
Hits you right in the nostalgia nerve. It's fun and well written. The only thing is when aiming with a controller the "A" and "B" button seem to swap position. It's kind of odd. I'll keep testing and change review to 5/5 if I figure it out.
Crow Country is a survival horror inspired by games from the PS1 era. While it's inspired by them, it has plenty of its own ideas (and quirks) giving it an identity of its own.
The presentation is on point: graphics, music and sounds are good and have a familiar-yet-different "PS1.5" vibe. The pixellated style might not be for everyone, and the characters aren't the most detailed, but it's all very deliberate and I think it successfully captures the atmosphere they were going for.
The gameplay is solid for the most part: expect enemies to be dangerous up close, and having to weave around them while dodging the traps is entertaining while providing some necessary anxiety for the genre (I played using the tank controls). Puzzles and backtracking are a staple of the genre, and CC is no exception. You also have some secrets, and you even have some minor choices to make here and there.
The game isn't without flaws, however: the camera is a REAL pain sometimes (aiming the gun auto-moves it behind you, which can completely obscure your vision), the puzzles are almost all too easy (and too many have excessive hints in the same room), the shooting is wonky (you can miss shots you are sure were dead on target, which can be the difference between dying and taking no damage), and as the game progresses, every map becomes littered with traps, which gets a bit annoying. Overall, the game might be too easy, which could be a problem for some.
Story-wise, the game has some good ideas, and some baffling ones. Thankfully, the plot is not too present, otherwise it could have harmed the game. Once everything is said and done, It feels like a bad parody of a Twilight Zone episode. Maybe you can chalk it off as a suitable "horror b-movie" plot, but I feel they missed their chance for something better (most of the characters aren't bad, though).
Ultimately, Crow Country is a fun game, and they especially nailed the atmosphere, which is so important for a horror game. I recommend it!
Crow country is a great love letter not only to surival horror of old, but the jrpg art style that grew up with it. Not only did I fall into a deep trance with its shooting, art, story, and user friendly hints, but I finished the entire game without meaning to, in a single sitting.
IF you were intrested in the new era of survival horror, Crow Country is the best starting point imo.
This game is exactly what it looks like, in a good way. You're getting a well-made ?isometric? survival horror game with a runtime that fits into a weekend. Modest replay value and plenty of secrets to find. Satisfying writing and ending, with a plot that feels like it began life as Blood Money's "Death of a Showman" mission.
Disclaimer, that though I have tried many of the classic games Crow Country takes inspiration from, none of those have really stuck for me, and I never finished any of them. Crow Country does seem to have a lot of friction points and rough edges ground off, leading to me actually finishing this one.
I just wish it wasn't so short! 4-5 hours goes by too quick. Even the easier Resident Evils usually last you about 8, maybe more if you stink at em.
fortunately bought this on sale. pretty good all around. story wise was very well done. I am a sucker for the fixed camera angles in horror games but the controls are pretty comfy with a controller. Mouse and keyboard not so much, but that added difficulty might increase your challenge and runtime so consider that.
