Quirky Indie Game #302

CrossCode, falls short due to its generic storyline and excessive quirkiness. The game's characters and plot seem all too familiar, lacking the freshness and innovation that one would expect from an indie title. The excessive quirkiness, while perhaps intended to add charm, instead becomes a distraction, diluting the overall gaming experience." Moreover, the game's mechanics, while serviceable, do little to distinguish CrossCode from its peers. The combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving elements, key components of any RPG, feel generic and uninspired. The game's quirky elements, instead of adding depth, seem to be a superficial layer that doesn't contribute to a substantial gaming experience. CrossCode, despite its potential, fails to deliver a unique and engaging JRPG experience

Really enjoying this game

Really glad I bought this game, I'm about 5 hours in and it has the type of game play I really enjoy, I like games where I feel like I'm constantly progressing without having to grind, it reminds me a bit of Xenoblad Chronicles, especially with the way quests work. It's also a bit of a collectathon, which I also enjoy. The combat is fun, I really get put off by RPGs that have turn based fighting so the action element really drew me in. There is a lot of content in this game, would highly recommend.

It's Pretty, but not too Fun.

Overall, the game has professional quality written all over it. Good art, good writing, the code actually works consistently, and the RPG elements are straightforward and fun. I gotta say, though, the plot is infantile (a game about a game! How meta!), and the combat reflects a trend in developers that I genuinely hate. Both enemy attacks and yours are structured so that a specific timing or tactic is required for avoiding damage. Rational judgements about speed and timing are thrown out the window as enemies divert drastically off course to land their attacks. It really pigeonholes how you approach combat and the special attacks don't really compensate. But you know, it functions well. So I can't really say they did a bad job, they just made a bad decision. I don't know how people enjoy this kind of play.

Revival of old SNES JRPGs!

I just completed the game and it was a lot of fun! I - as a person how grew up with the old Nintendo and Sega consoles - enjoyed this game really much. It has all the things I like about old JRPGs like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger etc. and adds modern elements to it. Everyone who likes named JRPGs should really check this game out. It is lovely designed, has very likable characters, challenging puzzles and a good story with a plot twist in the middle and a beautiful ending. There are even a lot of treasures and interesting quests to find. The quest design is also very great and diverse. The combat is very balanced and fun! No button smashing and rock/paper/scissors principal. Conclusion: Everything you need! The only thing I have to criticize is the aiming with the XBOX Controller. You aim with the right analog stick and unfortunately the aim position seem to lock every 45°. This is really troublesome when you need to aim in between during fast combat or time limited puzzles. I had to switch to mouse at some points to be able to aim fast and precise. What some players might want to know: I needed some time to get used to all the mechanics and the crafting system at first. It has a lot of mechanics. You have to try everything out and after a while you get used to everything and later on everything becomes second nature. The game also explains every new skill and mechanic at an appropriate time - with the option to reread and redo every tutorial. Very convenient! Backtracking and grinding makes also a small part of the game. You don't have to grind - which is nice - but makes things a little easier ;) The game is nearly perfect for me. I really wish I could give 5 stars - but I have to give very honest 4,9 stars due to the controller issue!
