Costume Quest

I had loved it then, i loved it now. I like the story, the battles are doable by all players. You don't have to be an experienced player to play and enjoy it. I finished it in one day and will play it again some time later.

For anyone who has Autumnal/Halloween rituals, this game is a must. Double Fine nail the charm of classic JRPGs and give it a cosy trick-or-treat twist.

A classic story of evil shenanigans occuring on Halloween, and kids saving the day, storywise the game is on solid footing. Sadly, the playability suffers from the game being an obvious port from console systems. Controls, graphics and camera angles are not up to par. I would have expected more from the often glorified Double Fine Studios.

This game has a lot to recommend it. Good writing, nice (cartoonish) graphics, nicely chosen music and it's different enough to be interesting without being weird. And halloween themed games aren't exactly overdone at the moment either, which really helps this game stand out from the crowd. That said, I play turn based games because I don't have the good reflexes needed for other kinds of games. While the combat in this game really is turn based, it also includes timing elements which are difficult for people like me. And other people who are fine with hitting specific buttons at specific times might be put off by the interruptions the turn based nature of combat imposes. This mix of styles may well appeal to some, but I can't help thinking the developers would have been better off going with either fully turn based combat or fully real time (possibly with optional pauses). Kudos to the developers for trying something a bit different, but in my case, it just doesn't work.

I've always been someone who loves Halloween, and probably always will be. So, it should be no surprise that when I found out about Costume Quest, I was pretty excited. However, since I'm cheap, I never really thought about buying it until now (GoG is selling it for $1.99 as of 2015/06/12). I picked it up, and it is quite a fun little thing. It's an RPG first thing, with turn-based battling that actually reminds me a bit of Pokémon. That will make no sense if you've never played it, but trust me, it makes sense when you play it, and it works beautifully. The design of the game is really something else. I've never seen a game made like this, the games art, though limiting through hand-drawn-looking art, is quite expressive and fun to look at. The orange colours everywhere remind me of Halloween, and that makes me happy. The narrative of the game is actually funny. There are several characters who are there to deliver humourous lines, and they do so. It actually made me crack a smile, which doesn't happen too commonly with games! Performance is fine. 30FPS cap, but that really isn't too big of a deal. Overall, if you're a Halloween lover like myself, you'll like, or even love this game. Even if you're not a Halloween lover, you may still find some enjoyment out of the enjoyable Pokémon-like battle sequences. 9.5/10
