Convoy is a tactical roguelike-like inspired by Mad Max and FTL in which you cross a wasteland in search of parts for your broken ship.
Presented in pixel art and set in a future post-apocalyptic setting, Convoy is a squad based tactical roguelike-like in its core. You travel with your combat vehicles and convoy across a wasteland to find parts needed to repair your broken spaceship. During your journey you will encounter strangers in randomized scenarios by picking up radio signals.
Depending on the choices you make, signals can either lead to tactical combat, text based dialogue or chance based role-play. Whatever choice you make, you need to keep your convoy and its cargo safe from raiders, privateers and other enemies. Keep upgrading your vehicles, as death is permanent in Convoy.
A new take on tactical combat: Combat plays out in real time as a high-speed car chase where you need to position your units and use abilities to maximise their effectiveness.
Exploration pays: You will encounter many different radio signals, each with a text based event. What doesn’t kill you may reward you with loot.
Fully customizable units: Each unit can be upgraded and outfitted with different weapons and abilities, allowing you to customize them to your needs.
A randomized planet: Each play-through features different main and side objectives, events, choices, and different consequences to your actions.
A cold war turning hot: Three factions vie for control over the planet, your actions tip the scales of balance making you an enemy to everyone. As each faction grows in strength, you need to keep up.
Permadeath at the core: Knowing one wrong move could lead to certain death puts you constantly on edge.
Played 3 times, beated the game in 2 of them. Game's answer is to wipe my last two game data. They aren't in stats. Worse than that, unlocked items are also gone. I don't want to repeat the same content, as the in-game quests already repeat a lot. OK game, you won. I won't enjoy you anymore.
Apparently players reacted to an early beta by asking for the game to be harder. The developers apparently responded by introducing a level of micromanagement and RNG that's just not fun. While enemy vehicles move intelligently, yours seem to do all they can to be useless. They navigate poorly, which makes avoiding obstacles, which destroy your vehicles completely, very difficult.
On an Easy game, from the beginning, I was chased by enemies much more powerful than me. I had no idea how to procure supplies, and in several games never succeeded in winning a battle or accomplishing anything, apparently. I could have watched even more videos and worked hard to learn what I'm trying to do., but that's not why I started at Easy.
Imagine FTL where you are not constantly on a timer, forced to abandon the unexplored regions.
Instead of being pushed into certain actions by the fleet FTL wise, you are nudged by progressively harder encounters.
Result may seem slightly easier, while still posing a enough challenge. It is just fair.
Lot of funny pop culture references. (anyone wanna buys some bottle caps? X-D)
Overall it is very enjoyable game.
Looking forward to Landinar from Convoy team.
As a fan of rougelike games and of tactical gameplay this title caught my attention as soon as it came out. It was one of the few games I've paid full price to play (instead of waiting and hoping for a sale). While the game certainly didn't fall flat on its face, in the end it didn't quite live up to my hopes for it either. Here is how it broke down:
The Good - The biggest draw of this game for me, the tactical combat, was as fast-paced and brutal as the gameplay trailer made it look. Because of how much effort I put in to upgrading and maintaining all my vehicles I found myself constantly worrying over them in combat, and that's a good thing because it shows some emotional investment in the pixels flying across my screen. I also enjoyed the hunt for loot to make my precious vehicles that much stronger.
The Bad - The biggest problem of this game is that it just doesn't have any soul. There is an idea here that could have been made into a great game, something unique and challenging and full of style (or at least something fun and memorable). But that vitality and passion seen in the most successful indie games is missing here. Perhaps the developers became distracted somewhere from what first interested them in this project, or they ended up trying to make this game fit in to a specific genre rather than letting the game breathe and grow into what it wanted to be. I don't know. All I can say is that when I save & quit this game I'm left with this nagging belief that I could have spent my time playing something a little keener, a little more "alive," a little more fun.
The Verdict - For fans of the genre, for fans of games like FTL, and for those curious about the vehicle combat, this game may be worth the price (or at least it may be worth dropping into your wishlist and waiting for a sale). But if you are looking for a "Mad Max" meets FTL kind of experience (which is how this game portrays itself), this game is probably not quite what you are looking for. It just lacks that sort of punch.
I love this game! it takes FTL and, in my opinion, ramps it up a notch with the Mad Max flavoring. I simply can not get enough of this game. that being said, I have got to find a way to access mods for this game!! all i can find are on the steam workshop, and i bought this game from gog specifically to avoid steam!! Please, someone, anyone, help me find mods for this game so i dont have to give additional steam money!! its not the developers fault mods arent available outside steam... or is it? meh i dunno, still 5 stars all day
