Description
Convoy is a tactical roguelike-like inspired by Mad Max and FTL in which you cross a wasteland in search of parts for your broken ship.

Presented in pixel art and set in a future post-apocalyptic setting, Convoy is a squad based tactical roguelike-like in its core. You travel with your combat vehicles and convoy across a wasteland to find parts needed to repair your broken spaceship. During your journey you will encounter strangers in randomized scenarios by picking up radio signals.

Depending on the choices you make, signals can either lead to tactical combat, text based dialogue or chance based role-play. Whatever choice you make, you need to keep your convoy and its cargo safe from raiders, privateers and other enemies. Keep upgrading your vehicles, as death is permanent in Convoy.
  • A new take on tactical combat: Combat plays out in real time as a high-speed car chase where you need to position your units and use abilities to maximise their effectiveness.
  • Exploration pays: You will encounter many different radio signals, each with a text based event. What doesn’t kill you may reward you with loot.
  • Fully customizable units: Each unit can be upgraded and outfitted with different weapons and abilities, allowing you to customize them to your needs.
  • A randomized planet: Each play-through features different main and side objectives, events, choices, and different consequences to your actions.
  • A cold war turning hot: Three factions vie for control over the planet, your actions tip the scales of balance making you an enemy to everyone. As each faction grows in strength, you need to keep up.
  • Permadeath at the core: Knowing one wrong move could lead to certain death puts you constantly on edge.

Fun at first but pacing suffers later on

I don't want to echo too much of what others have said about this game, yes it's FTL-like with it's vehicle management during combat and yes the game engine drops to single digit frames during the final boss. After beating the game though, I've uninstalled it. Despite it's issues, Convoy is a good game (for a while) but not a great one. The exploration is too tedious and the side quests aren't as compelling as FTL and end up using too much time and resources to reach. This ends up dragging the pacing at mid-end game to a crawl. I'd say pick up Convoy on sale to experience the combat but there isn't enough lasting appeal for regular play-throughs.

Not bad. Could use more work.

You`ve crashed a space ship on a planet and need to rumble out in a 3 vehicle convoy to find the parts to fix the ship. On the way you meet many random fights and incidents and must deal with these. Think Mad Max. I like how the game is quite randomised and if lucky you can power through and get pretty strong vehicles and go on for hours or be wiped out in 10 minutes. But it`s not just luck with actual strategic and tactical wisdom you can avoid dying. For instance, always upgrade and repair asap, every time, when you get some spare sparts or something new. You`ll need it. It plays dead is dead. You get killed, start a new game. I like this as it makes you quite invested to survive the best you can instead of just lazily reloading. There are some little nods and witty encounters. I like how you can pretty much be nice, be mean or just shoot anyone you meet, although for some things the game just forces you to shoot someone dead. I`d really like the choice to just drive away instead, even if it`s an evil raider. The game would`ve been great if done in a 3rd person type view with the bouncing vehicles jostling and shooting eachother. Just watching it from a top-down loses some of the excitement this could have had. For instance, you don`t really get that sense of dangerous speed. It`s ok for s short gaming spell when you don`t have time for anything else. I would`ve liked more customisation (colours of vehicles etc).

Great Game

I have not played FTL as off this review, so I am not basing my opinion on how this game compares to FTL unlike almost evry review here. The game has a nice pace to it and it was nice discovering things gradualy. The final boss is super fun to fight and so are the other boss battles. The game is not without its flaws, but it was great entertainment for the price and I also loved the sound track.

Almost great

I came here looking to get a fix after playing FTL to death and dam if this game didn't deliver. Dont get me wrong - it's nothing like FTL nor does it have the same level of difficulty or replayability. But if you enjoyed FTL and have been feeling withdrawals then this game will probably do the trick for you.

Rewarding Roguelite

I quite enjoyed my time with Convoy. You are onboard a large interstellar ship that goes down on a foreign planet. Your ship needs repairs and you are the man to go out into the world and get the parts your ship needs. That is the setup for you to pilot your convoy through the wilderness in search of parts, scrap, tactical combat, new weapons and vehicles, and unique encounters. There is a constant risk/reward balance that these types of games usually need to be compelling. Do you buy that new weapon or stock up on fuel? Do you try and supercharge your engines to escape this upcoming combat encounter, using extra fuel, because you're banged up from the last encounter? What choice do you make in this random encounter scenario? The game reminds me in many ways of FTL, except instead of controlling a single static ship you are controlling several vehicles which can move. That adds a layer of tactical combat that is quite rewarding. Now things like range, speed, maneuverability and terrain matter, not just the stats of your vehicles or what equipment you have. There's nothing quite as rewarding as ramming your opponent into a wall or buzzsawing them to death. There is a definite "Mad Max" vibe to this world and the graphics, while simple, reinforce this. My biggest complaint is that is feels a bit light on content compared to other roguelite type games. Bottom line, if the idea of driving across the wastes of a forbidding planet battling pirates and scrounging parts sounds fun to you, and it is fun for me, then buy this game.
