A really enjoyable game. A very pleasant surprise. Action exploration, a bizarre atmosfear, a solid lore.
It's been a long time since I finished a game with the feeling of "oh shit, it's over... damn I still want to continue".
Of course there is content, we can continue with the DLCs (with links to the Alan Wake series) which gives a solid playing time (30-40 hours).
A well-illustrated feeling arriving at the end credits of the main story, with this excellent song by Porpucine Tree <3 fitting perfectly with the overall atmosphere : beat the encore !
Recently, every 4-6 seconds the game drops to 1 or 0 FPS for about 3 seconds. Played with all sorts of settings but keeps doing it, even in the main menu. Only game I own that does this. Also, before this issue, i would get a problem where the main screen would just go black. I would still see subtitles and the pause menu but thats all i could see. Would need to restart my PC to fix it. Really want to finish the game but cant play at 1fps.....

Disclosure: I love Control and my review is biased.
Control is peak Sam Lake and Remedy. Expect a great story, told not without imperfections, with diverse characters that you'll love, hate, or be ambivalent on. Voice acting is pretty top notch, and the motion capture does a great job to match.
Graphically speaking, Control leans into the realistic but with a cohesive and well done art style. A little too early to tell, but I think it'll hold up well in the years to come.
Gameplay? I love the 3rd-Person running and gunning and bevy of superpowers, the gameplay and combat was super smooth for me and once you find your playstyle you'll be hooked. Combat is split between various "firearms" and powers. While there is only one wrong choice (Melee is bad, don't do Melee), the Yeetus-Deletus power and its upgrades are much better than others. So some balance tweaks were due. but passed over.
The writing is...very very good. Clever, funny in the right places and maintaining seriousness when appropriate. Any humour inserted into a serious moment is well-delivered as gallows humour. I can't get into specifics without spoilers, but the in-universe setup and world building is excellent.
And the DLC? Get the Ultimate Edition. Run, don't walk, to the checkout.
Stunning artstyle, great acting, good story, repetitive gameplay that ends in being a bit too boring game.
Artstyle and acting is excellent. There will be memorable situations, locations and boss fights. Mainly because how they looked like. Just for this it's worth buying and playing a game.
Story... is somehow deep, but I might have missed something. There are some mind shortcuts of what our goal acutally is. I felt motivation shifing or getting less and less intereting. We are bombarded with files, documents, that you can read but after 30'th of irrelevent and uninteresting doc I've stopped bothering with reading all of those. I didn't give a dam about Dylan. Why she keeps saying "we" and that motive is not kept in main storyline? Suddenly you attack gigantic ball and something happens because of something... and "we" became "her and something", and it's not "player and her" as she constatly speakes to the viewer/player in cutscenes? At the end I was confused why I finished the main story. Confused in not good way. And I like weird movies and scenarios.
Combat is good, really nice. Problem is that it's repetivive and at some point - not challanging at all. Visually it's stunning. Nice moves, nice powers, everything is flying. But for some reasons it gets boring quite fast. Encouters were like annoying events that prevents me from exploring/getting to the boss, then actual emphesizing the weirdness of Hiss or supporting story.
Unfortunatelly at some point, there are fetch quests. Bring this, find that, gather stawberies, bring herbs, collect taxes, kill all enemies in the area. That was the reason I stopped playing the game after the main story. I tried, but I found that I'm forcing myself to progress, thus I quit.
The game is definitely worth it, but there's alot of buts ...
Overall storytelling, writing, characters and voice acting is top notch. This game would have been so much better if it was more an adventure game rather than action game. While bright and shiny with a lot of additional mechanics, the combat just doesn't feel right:
- Half of the time I'm like "That should have hit" and ther other half like "That should have not hit" gunplay feels completely random, shots get stopped by random pixels ...
- Random mods, well this is not fun, for more than 6 hours I've been trying to find better mods for my Pierce, no dice I'm still using crappy Uncommon mods because I can't find better
- Respec cost 30k? Are you joking? How am I supposed to experiment with different builds and mod combinations if I need to farm for 1h to reset everything back to 0?
- Jump / Levitate is the most frustrating thing in the game, sometimes you just flight through any debris but sometimes you're gonna jump of off some debris.
- Shield sometimes blocks the damage, sometimes it doesn't ... it also increases your hitbox so thanks but no thanks, I'll rather keep dodging
- Launch likes to grab and hit everything but the thing you're targeting,
Again, the game is absolutely gorgeous - graphics, style, concept, audio and just everything. The gameplay, though, sucks.
