Description
Combat Mission Beyond Overlord (CMBO) is the first of the award winning and  ground breaking Combat Mission game series.  It recreates battles in Northwestern Europe from the June 6th 1944 Allied "D-Day" invasion of Normandy through the end of the war in May 1945. Combat Mission allows players to lead historically accurate forces from six nationalities (U.S., British, Canadian, Polish, French, and German) into battle on widely varied terrain in all weather and lighting conditions.

Combat is simulated in turns using science and behavioral logic, not “gamey” conventions such as hit points, armor ratings, tables of resolution, or other overly simplistic concepts.  The pioneering “WeGo” gameplay system helps avoid many of the realism problems of other games by requiring both players to submit their orders and having them carried out simultaneously.  The resulting 60 second replayable “movie” can be viewed from any angle and perspective before moving onto the next turn.
Play stand alone battles, connected battles, or “Quick Battles” created on-the-fly.  The full featured Editor allows you to create your own battles.  A large amount of community generated battles and Mods are available for free download.  In addition to the very challenging single player mode, two people can play on one computer, TCP/IP network connection, or via PBEM.

Apply common sense and intuition and don’t expect "gamey" tactics to work - no matter how successful they were in other games. You will be forced to plan ahead, use timing, suppression fire, feints and flanking attacks to survive, let alone to win. When planning your moves, think about what would work in the real world, not what would work in other games.

Maybe the most embodying game of "gameplay over graphics" ever made.

For anyone interested in realistic simulation of the battlefield on a tactical level (including the psychological level of combat stress) perhaps no better game has ever been made. I understand that this game is difficult to appreciate from looking at it. In fact, I even played the demo a couple of times and the controls were so complex yet the graphics so simple looking that I thought it was just a really simple game with crappy graphics and overly complex controls. However, once I figured how much of a hardcore realistic battlefield simulator this really is, it very quickly became my favorite game series of all time. There is in incredible amount of deep simulation going on in this game and its sequals. It is like playing army men but with the exact level of real life fire power, spotting abilities and combat efficiency of every infantry man, combat vehicle and stationary gun modeled to be perfectly accurate. All of the war machinery is modeled perfectly as they are (or were, as the game simulates WW2 combat) in real life with the exact same armor thicknesses, angles, weak points, level of reliability, weight, accuracy, rate of fire, velocity of rounds, armor penetrative power, blast radius (for killing infantry), likelihood of becoming mired on varying terrain, turret turning speed, optics quality, etc. I could go on for an hour at how creepily accurate this game is at modeling and recreating the course of relatively small scale battles with all the different factors it models but the fact is you can play if for years and still learn more about the strategy of real life war everytime you play it. That's why it is used to train soldiers in real life. For instance, you will fight an hour long battle with your 8 shermans vs 3 tiger tanks, you can win if you use the true to life tactics that our soldiers did (leading with infantry, keeping our tanks hidden until you find the enemy tank and then attempt to flank, theres no way a sherman can penetrate frontal tiger armor or even side or rear armor unless rather close) but if you just drive up your tanks on top of the hill, expect to be quickly decimated and rendered a combat ineffective force very quickly. The game accurately models what it takes to be effective on the battlefield: wits, tactical awareness, intelligence, effective recon and knowledge of your enemies' equipments capabilities. The satisfaction that you get from successfully overcoming an enemy position with the exact same tactics used by our family members who served in WW2 (as well as getting a feeling for the inevitable cost in human lives) is a feeling you can't find in any other game. If you are into incredibly true to life strategy, tactics and unbelievably accurately reproduced military equipment of all types, you really ought to check this game out. Stick with it long enough to learn it and many of you will realize what an incredible gem this series is. FYI, the enter or return key is very useful as it displays what each units combat abilities and firepower are. This is especially important for seeing the capabilities of tanks; infantry are mainly just disposable sets of eyes that spot for the more powerful weapons. This is the first game in the series and the others (Combat Mission: Afrika Korps, CM: Barbarrossa to Berlin, CM: Shock Force) have improved graphics and even better realism and most importantly: more tactical control over the battle, although not by a huge amount. This game is unfortunately the only one of the series my old computer can run without significant slow down. I also am not one of those people who loves handing out 5 star reviews for games which I just think are pretty good. I love to point out the flaws in games but frankly the games uniqueness and nailing of the most core component of a game like this, the tactical simulation aspect, makes the minor flaws pretty insignificant in comparison. The game could in fact easily be improved in a lot of areas, however, unfortunately the game is essentially one of a kind. The Combat Mission series provides a tense first hand look at the extreme tactical difficulties, necessary sacrifices, and heroics our troops encountered fighting the Nazis. Of course, you could also play the role of the germans and experience just how their technologies' dominance allowed them to often roll over their opponents with ease.

conscripts

So I'm setting up a 1000 point meeting engagement Quick Battle, with random terrain, and I'm picking out my troops, when I realize I've been playing Combat Mission for more than a year, and I've never played with Conscript troops yet. God, they're cheap! I can buy a buttload with my 1000 points! So I do. I chuck in a few conscript halftracks and some tanks, but I make the tanks Regular troops. I let the computer pick the Germans, they will have Regular troops against my conscripts, but I outnumber them 3:1. Now the map. Three Victory flags, left, right, and center. I need to advance and take the flags, the enemy will do the same. I have good cover, trees, etc on the left, not much in the center, and almost none on the right for the advance. No matter, I think, my swarm of conscripts will take that flank. I put my tanks to the left with another swarm. I'm weak in the middle but they are just going to move up to cover and engage. I'll sweep in, then crush the center. I have a lot of troops, but moving them is a snap. I can set up complex move orders with a few clicks. Run to cover, move cautiously to the edge of the trees, go prone and engage, click, click, click. On the right flank, I just drag select the whole swarm and tell them to march to the flag. The center and left flanks get more detailed orders as I want to be sure they get there in one piece. Now I just have to hit Go and see what happens. The first few turns are uneventful. Finally, gunfire. And there, I see why they are called conscripts. With the first shots, at least a third of my right flank panicked and hit the dirt. More shots, and my massive onslaught was in shambles. The whole flank was either eating dirt or running for whatever cover they could find. One more turn, and my plan was in shambles. The tanks had managed to take the left though. I moved whatever infantry I had into buildings and set up a defense there. The center was pinned and not returning fire. To the right, there was one little clump of trees, and half my troops had hightailed it there, while the other half were running for the hills. Now here, I zoomed in on that clump of trees and just kept hitting end turn. More shots would come in, and everyone was panicked or pinned, but I noticed that I had very few casualties. Basically, the sound of gunfire was enough to totally stop them. But by and by, they started to get comfortable with it as long as they stayed in the trees. More end turn. Near the end of the game, their morale had returned to the point I was able to order them, so I ordered them to engage. By now, I think the Germans were low on ammo from plinking away at us, so our fire was having an effect. In the last two turns, I took my least panicked troops and ordered them to advance to cover near the flag. By turn 30, I had put the ownership of that flag in question, and managed a draw.

Awesome game

I just love this game, is one of the most fun strategy games I've ever played. I'm not a huge fan of turn based strategy games, but this one blew me out. Yes, it has ugly graphics, but the gameplay is top notch thanks to a simple and clear interface but with an incredible depth in the gameplay, and plus you can play multiplayer matches by e-mail or instant messaging (just send the file with your turn). I've spent entire nights with CM: My soldiers are pinned under the enemy fire, some of them are running away, in the meantime my tanks are surrounding the houses where the shots are coming from, at the following turn, some reinforcements arrive, maybe I can change the course of the battle in the next turn... It has great real life scenarios from WWII or you can create your own. If you are a fan of strategy games, you can't miss this one up. Plus, if you a re a fan of WWII games, this is a must. Loved it. An incredible underrated game. Just don't judge it by its graphics.

Special Edition!!

Holy cow!! I did not expect the game to have OVER 200 scenarios!!!! If I were Good Old Games I'd modify the CCBO page to say "This is the special edition that includes over 200 scenarios and 11 mods." Just saying. But it was a nice surprise.

Fantastic Game

This game has enormous depth, and is a superb experience in single player or multi-player. It's not intended for twitch gamers, but if you're a little bit patient, its pleasures are rewarding indeed.
