Description

After tracking a Soviet landing force bound for Iceland it is time to plan your attack. Do you silently close in to torpedo the landing ships and escape during the resulting chaos? Or strike with long-range missiles but risk counterattack from the enemy escorts? Have you detected them all, could another submarine be out there listening for you? Has the hunter become the hunted? Will you survive the Cold Waters?

Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.

You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.

Features:
  • Real-time naval combat
  • Over 40 classes of ships and submarines all meticulously researched
  • Dynamic Campaign where your performance matters
  • Realistic sonar model
  • Authentic Soviet combat tactics

Red Storm Rising resurrected.

A reinterpretation of Microprose's Red Storm Rising, nothing more, nothing less. And this, in my opinion, it is a great thing. I was searching for this kind of game since my Amiga went to the heaven of computers. Mind me, it is not a simulator as "Silent Service" and so on, but it is a great game nonetheless. In a review I read "No Silent Hunter", yes, correct, and "Cold waters" does not want to be anything else than "Cold Waters", if you want something more simply is not the case, and I'm glad for it. In my opinion the 3D, even if nice, is useless, I never use it. Only two points, the price is a bit too high, 37 euros are simply too much for this game, the price should be less than 20 euros (I bought it at 18). Keyboard controls should be customizables, I do not like defaults too much, As veduma.

Incredibly Tense

From the view point of a someone completely oblivious to this genre before this game, This game is incedibly good fun. The gameplay is slow, but very tense. Let me give you an example. You sneak up on your prey which can be anything from a lone submarine to a large fleet to a resupply convey. You take your time, slowly using your sonar to figure out which ships are friend or foe. You silently position yourself to unload a volley of torpedoes at the enemy while a civilian trawler glides directly above you, completely unaware that the ships in the distance will soon be at the bottom of the ocean. Then you pull the trigger. All hell breakes loose, your topedoes and missiles make their way to the target while you sonar lights up with contacts from boeys dropped by helicopters and torpedoes fired by denesive submarines. Time crawls by as you take evasive action to get away from the incoming fire. They fly past where you were minutes ago as you watch your targets, one by one you hear your targets being hit and begin to break up. Mission complete, you head out of the area happy you've slowed the enemies war effort. then out of nowhere you hear one of your officer shout out "Torpedo in the water, Torpedo in the water!". You order evasive maenuvers and a steep climb as a torpedo dropped by a vengful helicopter, locked on and only a few yards away, soars by just under your belly. You drop decoys and create knuckles trying to distract it but it's only a stop gap measure before it locks on again you continue a deadly dance for what feels like an eternity before it finally runs empty and self destructs. Finally, after all of that, you finally get to go home. Your efforts are recognized by your superiors but there's no rest, as your sent on another hunt. That's what the games like, you're constantly on edge with a unique thrill which ends with an incrediblyt rewarading sense of relief.

Love this...

Cause it has the cold war spirit as Dangerous Waters without being such a die hard sim like this... And the graphics are really good... Only sad, that it is quiet around the developers...so we can´t expect any new addons/Dlcs to CW...

I had loads of fun

Cold Waters was a lot of fun for me. The three campaigns offer different technology levels and thus different tactical appoaches. Once you get the hang of the mechanics, it gets addictive.

Disappointing game experience

I am slightly disappointed by the game. I have outlined below my dislikes for the game. There are still a lot of bugs with this GOG version, such as not being able to change your weapon load out while in port for a particular weapon TLAM. Not getting credit for sinking ships. Damage occurring to your sub out of no where. Pretty dumb for the designers to put the white lettering on the world map the same color, which makes it hard to read. Not given enough time to get to your mission area. It would have been nice to slow down the speed of the game. You can increase it, but not slow it. Can't zoom in close enough on the tactical map, which would help in evading torpedoes. Only 2 decoys given. Since this is a modern sub and not WW2 era subs, the periscope is worthless The sub finds contacts on its own. So I miss using that to locate targets. The enemy locates you way to easy. Even with keeping your distance and silent running they seem to know where you are. They should have provided tools to made it easier to identify to avoid detection. Would have been nice to go on a patrol like in Silent Hunter to sink targets of opportunity, instead of just completing missions. If you are just using a regular keyboard for controlling your sub, then the controls are not intuitive. Too many of the nav keys are to close together, making it easy in the heat of battle to hit the wrong key. Then suddenly your sub is surfacing. If you can get it on sale as I did, and you are a sub fan, it's worth messing around with, just don't expect an amazing experience. I was much happier back in the day with Red Storm Rising. Crazy all these decades later they can't improve, other than visually, on that experience.
