The right game for the wrong game engine
The biggest problem that this game has is its use of Roller Coaster Tycoon's game engine. It worked great for that game, but not this. So indeed you are better off getting OpenTTD. Unless you are just here for the soundtrack... like I was.

Fairly Good
If you enjoy other sims like Transport Tycoon, simcity, etc then this might be a fun one for you. If you played the first two incarnations of Rollercoaster Tycoon, then this game will be pretty familiar in regards to controls and graphics. As far as economic modeling, Railroad Tycoon 3 is superior, but this is pretty good. Certainly worth the discount price it sells for now.

Beat the game!
Yes, it has its flaws: - you can easily exploit some game mechanics (extend stations) - there is no real economy in the game (no buyers for produced goods required) - planes make other public transportation redundant in lategame - track building (although I like it, I guess others could hate it) But: - still the best game of its genre Includes: - so many options, so many trains, trucks, buses, planes, etc. - good level of micromanagement - clear UI, perfect for this type of game - train crashes (if signals are wrong or tracks end in nowhere) I beat the game - every single mission - twice and guess I'll have a third run.

A failed attempt to milk it...
This was an attempt to cross-breed old and awesome Transport Tycoon with slightly newer and awesome Rollercoaster Tycoon engine, since both game engines grow essentially from the same stem. However, the prime goal seemed to be making quick money instead of making a good game, and it shows. While it has some interesting innovations, it's just not worth it. Google for OpenTTD instead, download for free and enjoy!
