Description
From Julian Gollop, the designer of the original, award-winning XCOM game comes Chaos Reborn - a fast paced, turn-based wizard combat with the tactical positioning of chess and the bluffing / odds calculation of poker.

WARNING - superb RNG management skills required! Or just have fun.

You play the role of a fighting wizard armed with a selection of spells and magical staff. Some spells summon creatures but others are more exotic, such as the Gooey Blob which spreads uncontrollably across the terrain. The balance between Law and Chaos can be altered to your advantage, or you can cast illusions to deceive your adversaries. It’s a game of bluff, tactics, and calculated risks with nail-biting decisions from one turn to the next.

  • Turn based wizard tactics for 1-4 players
  • Multiplayer battles with live or asynchronous play and monthly league competion
  • Offline Realm Quest Campaign, and online single-player Realm Quests created by players, with co-op vs AI and invading other players’ realms.

Note: This game may require additional serial key for multiplayer mode. In case it is not automatically generated in your GOG.com library (open it via website → select the game → More → Serial Keys), please reach out to our Support team.

A huge disappointment

There is one game mode in Chaos Reborn, the base PvP Chaos mode, which is genuinely great. It's a highly complex turn-based arena where two players face each other controlling a mage unit who has a random card set of summons with very interesting mechanics and effects. The goal is to protect your mage and kill the other mage. While there are a lot of deep systems, it's very RNG heavy and this means the outcome of a match is always hard to predict. It's obviously not for everybody, but it's remarkably good at what it aimed to be. Unfortunately, this mode was pretty much left as is since launch with little support, while the devs seem to have focused almost entirely on catering to misguided negative reviews that complain about the excess of RNG and the lack of a single-player campaign. Instead of focusing on improving the good game they had on launch, the devs made a no-RNG mode, which just sucks and is unfun, and created a half baked single-player mode that would have never been enough to bring over people who wanted a single-player campaign. Neither mode offers anything of value to the people who actually liked the game and neither was able to convert the negative reviews into positive. So what I'm saying is this game was mismanaged. And as a result the niche community they could have built around the PvP RNG heavy strategy/tactics game they made dwindled while they tried to appeal to people who don't like the game. Last time I played, finding a match against a human seemed impossible. You can play against bots and still have a decent time. If you happen to have friends or family who like this style of game, I believe there's a hotseat multiplayer option that will suit you well. It's just a hugely wasted opportunity and a huge disappointment considering what they had on launch was and still is the best part of the game and all the post launch support the game got only served to further distance it from that vision.

PRNG can be fun.

Great game. The main reason why this game is so great and worthy of, is simple: there no any other game like this, despite original Chaos: The Battle of Wizards for ZX Spectrum platform. It may seem as something familiar on the screenshots, but the truth is, that this game is the unique masterpiece, designed by the man who defines the turn-based genre on PC (not just MO, the history of). The heart of the game is in its multiplayer mode, never even have tried to play single player campaign, to be honest. It has unique art style (a really rare feature nowadays) nice and cute animation, it has "Gary" feature (a nice guy quantum pro-tech, often available at CR Tournament Tracker website), has great community that helps you in no time with any questions about. Good performance, no real bugs were noticed. Of Course is has some cons, but as i've said before, considering to its uniqueness, it can't be compared to any other game.

Get it for the multiplayer

I'm a kickstarter backer, I contributed to the game quite a bit more than the price it's sold for here and I'm very happy about what I got. While Mr Gollop is best known for the original x-com, he is also the god of turn based multiplayer games. After the 8-bit era he ran the now defunct Laser Squad Nemesis, and now this. Do yourself a favour and get it for the huge multiplayer fun factor. Don't let yourself be misled by the spells having a cast chance, this game still requires thinking, and a lot of it. In addition to planning your moves, you also need to have a backup plan for when your casts fail. And remember, not only your spells will fail, but also your opponent's, so it's all fair in the end. I can't say anything about the single player part because I haven't played it. I jumped into the multiplayer from the first backer only alpha, and never looked back. Defeating (or being defeated by) humans is a lot more fun than playing against AI wizards in this game. Just jump into the multiplayer and learn by dying, it's a lot of fun!

Great multiplayer strategy game

This game is enormously fun in multiplayer, as others have mentioned. The main takeaway I'd like to add in is that the devs are fantastic. I have practically never seen a game so consistently updated with not just patches, but new content in the form of new maps, new game types/modes, and entirely new gameplay mechanics. Snapshot has done a great job with this, and I am extremely pleased with their uncommon dedication to supporting their game and continuing to improve it. I have a great deal of faith in their future endeavors as a result. As others have said, the singleplayer is somewhat lackluster, though I was surprised by how engaged I actually got in the writing. It's a pretty cool universe. With that said, much as I'd care to see more of this universe, this is not a game one plays primarily for the singleplayer. The multiplayer is clearly the focus of the game, and it's excellent. It's a great turn-based strategy game. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Gollop's Khaos battle with a twist.

It may need some tweeking but its good to see Good ol Julian Gollop back at it pioneering turn based strategy games! His works never get old!! This is no exception. It may need a bit of polishing and updating though but okay! This is fine!!
