MY JOURNEY MAKING THIS GAME
I'm a self-taught solo-dev who built this passion project over 6 years while holding down a full time job and raising a family. I dedicated myself to work 5 minutes a day no matter what, and built the game piece by piece, not really knowing where I was going or how it would all end.

An enjoyable adventure which has a good balance between the CRPG elements - combat, story, inventory management, automap and so on. Recommended for anyone looking for a great pastime for a small price.
First off, I want to give props to the developer for not only creating a great game but also for responding to a bug report of mine within minutes of posting it. Incredibly responsive and obviously cares a great deal about his creation.
Secondly, as mentioned in other reviews, this game is an incredible value for its price tag. I personally have put over a hundred overs into it, and I find myself coming back time and time again. The game has deep customization with each character having abilities, skills, stats, and traits that allows for a lot of replayability. I find the magic system to be unique and interesting, in which spells can eventually be memorized from books with repeated use and power/level up as each spell is used. I also find the Monster Lore skill of note in which you gain bonuses against specific creatures as you defeat them repeatedly in combat.
Great game and an easy recommendation.
GREAT GAME. I've dumped hours into it and enjoyed it thoroughly. I love the story, and the combat mechanics, and the char acters, and the art style, and the magic and and and and etc etc.
Only thing I could criticize is that it feels like he (the dev) didn't have a very large play-testing group, which is pretty essential for cutting down fat and confusion on turn based rpgs. Its not a big deal though, some kind of off enemy placement, battles take a bit longer than I'd like, and sometimes I get pretty stuck in the main-story progression.
Over all, best turn based rpg I've played in a good few years. Keep up the good work, brother.
I had bought it a year ago played for 10 hours and stopped playing for whatever reason. But I recently decided to start it up again and I am very glad I did. The game is fantastic; Challenging turn-based tactical combat with lots of abilities and spells to acquire, great exploration with lots of secrets to uncover, and a decent story / lore.
Dialogue is fairly minimal (it uses a keyword system) but enjoyable. The focus of the game is on the combat, progressing with your character, and acquiring new equipment. Some of the sidequests are a bit uninspired (e.g., "bring me 5 monster tails") but since the game focuses on combat so much I suppose that is to be expected.
I highly recommend the game to everyone. It is a hidden gem and a bargain for the price. My only real complaint is that it left me wanting more. Here's hoping for a DLC or sequel.
5 stars might be stretching it a little, the game is not perfect, but for a solo dev it's pretty incredible.
Yes, the combat is a little messy and gets repetitive in some areas, and some things could be explained a little better, and inventory management gets annoying at times, some things can be abused to get very strong once you understand the system better, but overall I had a great time playing Caves of Lore, there really aren’t any huge flaws, only things to refine.
The character system is moderately complex and works well, the game uses learn-by-use spell and skill system, and this might be the first game where I don’t dislike this. You also unlock new spells and abilities by using simpler ones. You have a lot of freedom in selecting and upgrading gear and character abilities/spells.
Combat is a bit of a mess, but it’s quick and fairly satisfying. Could be improved, but it’s fine.
The plot is… it’s alright. It’s pretty original and sets up a sequel.
I love the graphics, music and sounds are good.
There are some secrets in the game that you can only unlock by reading books or talking to characters and saying magic words in right places (by manually typing them). Feels good to do that in a world dominated by games with quest markers.
