MY JOURNEY MAKING THIS GAME
I'm a self-taught solo-dev who built this passion project over 6 years while holding down a full time job and raising a family. I dedicated myself to work 5 minutes a day no matter what, and built the game piece by piece, not really knowing where I was going or how it would all end.

Exceedingly good for the pricetag. I would say all parts of the game are pretty good, nothing important is missing, and combat isn't a slog (and it is most of the game). I'm a chronic reroller and I never felt like I had to do that even when I made mistakes with perks and skillpoints.
Super responsive dev, constant updates to the game (both content and bug fixes). Occasional bugs can be encountered, but he fixes them lightning fast. Haven't seen a faster response time elsewhere :) . Helpful community. Old-school feel, if you are old like me, you'll most likely be absorbed into the game. Deserves all the praise.
There are many things you'll have to figure out yourself, but again, Discord channel has all the friendly helpful neighbors.
The last but not least, there is a good boy and he will decimate opponents if you invest in him and improve his equipment. There are special equipment just for him. Cuteness and deadliness in one furry package.
You won't regret buying this game.
I've put several hours into Caves of Lore and can say confidently that while the game is not perfect, it's been a great experience. Learning about the characters and world has been interesting, and the plot unfolding has me hooked. I'm playing a caster, and learning/leveling spells through equipping and using tomes has been very satisfying. I haven't finished, but I intend to. And that 's a 5 star review for me.
There is something oddly charming about this game. On the graphical side, I realize it may not be for everyone. But I have a soft spot for 2D with distinctive art style, so this hit just the right spot. Music is nice and calming, albeit with little variety. I did mute it at some point due to the repetitive combat track.
The story is told through keyword-based dialogues, as well as numerous books and notes. That is to say, those caves contain quite a bit of lore. The story has a slightly... nebulous quality, much like the fog that permeates most of the land. While it contains some of standard trappings, it managed to get me hooked. I found myself reading all of lore and it helps that the writing is up to snuff.
The turn-based combat is excellent, with tons of abilities and spells, which are are learned and improved by use. If I had to nitpick, I'd say there are too many encounters and that the combat gets rather easy. It is further trivialized by the enchanting and sharpening mechanics.
Caves of Lore reminded me of the good old days, but without preying on nostalgia, like so many other indies. It does its own thing and does it really well.
I don't always review games, but when I do... it's those I think are worth the time of fans of classic and newer CRPGs alike. I've been immensely enjoying the exploration, mechanics, ***lore***/creative worldbuilding, and basically everything about this extremely charming title. The developer - a solo dev working on the game part-time, though you wouldn't know it from the incredible level of support he's consistently provided, including through his very active Discord - has poured his heart into this first game, and it truly shows.
I could go on about why this is easily my personal RPG GOTY, but I suggest any RPG fan give this a serious look. The price is almost criminally low for the amount of quality RPG goodness you're getting here. See you in the caves.
