Combat in Cat Quest takes place entirely in real time, allowing you to get close to enemies with a slash of your blade, dodge roll to avoid a counter-attack, and then finish them off with powerful magic! Wield the ancient spells of Lightnyan, Flamepurr, and Healpaw to vanquish your foes! (Fur real!)

Solid game, a categorical RPG quick romp

(PC review) Cat Quest simplifies the RPG mechanics down to its core -- fetch quest, kill all the baddies, get random loot, level-up, repeat. You'd think it would get boring but the cat-puns are fresh and the dialogue knows when to be tongue-in-cheek. The action combat is similarly refreshingly simple, it's Attack, Magic, and Dodge, the controls feel tight and fast. Strongly recommend playing this on a gamepad attached to your PC (Logitech F310 worked great with the default config). The enemies get a little bit familiar, firmly tied to their magical attack pattern, but that just means you get to slip into the war dance rhythm. The art style is gorgeous and bright, energetic and just fun. Crisp lines, deliberate animation design. Each creature, landmark and NPC has its own character. Some NPCs are borrowed but most are fresh or at least remixed. Cons: There’s a touch of grinding when you hit a cave that’s harder than you expected and you want to level up your magic. I recommend trying out all the different magic spells and find a few different ones to get comfortable with, as the first fireball attack doesn’t level enough to carry you to the end of the game. Another con is that all loot pickups, even the “store” is all RNG and there didn’t seem to be a way to sell or even trash your unused gear (you just have an infinitely big sortable inventory). In some ways this is “the simplest inventory system you could possibly design”, and in Cat Quest’s pursuit of elegant simplicity this is almost forgivable, but awkward. Story was solid in the beginning, went a bit confusing with the final boss fight, but had a nice happy resolution in my opinion. In all, I had a lot of fun with this game, the controls were tight and fun, and the dungeon fights kept me on my toes (but in a relaxed way, if that makes sense). 4-6 hours of entertainment. Perfect for kids. Worth it, if only to see “here’s what an elegantly simple fun action RPG looks like”. Probably low replayability.

Fun Casual Action RPG

Having played the iOS version of Cat Quest multiple times on an iPhone 6S, I came to the version that GOG is selling with some expectations and was not disappointed. The primary difference between the two is that that the iOS version uses touch controls entirely where you tap the screen to move around, attack, cast spells, etc. The GOG PC version claims to support controllers but as I do not own one, it instead uses WASD controls for movement plus the mouse for combat where you left click to attack with the equipped weapon and right-click to cast spells. Although this difference initially required some adjustments that resulted in a few early deaths, I found that the WASD controls were actually easier and better once I got used to them. I wasn't finding myself accidentally running away from an enemy that I wanted to attack (which is something that happened more than once in the iOS version.) This difference in controls was most apparent when fighting the mimics to obtain the golden key, which took several attempts on iOS but was completed on the first try on the GOG PC version. If there is a complaint, it is that the random nature of equipment drops can make the game feel more difficult that it actually is early on. Ideally you should be only hitting dungeons because it is new, you want the gold key chest or were led there due to a quest. If you find yourself grinding out experience, try looking for side-quests and dungeons around your level range.

Kids' game

I gave the rating right after the first playthrough, given this is a kidsgame 4 star would probably more realistic. The story and graphic is nice, has an epic tone, the pacing is good. First impression is great, but trying a second time we have to face this is easy, made for kids. On the other hand, Mew Game offers interresting change of pace if you dare it, and given this is practicaly a rythm-game there is only the question of dedication someone comoplete this all difficulty option tagged ;)

Much better than I expected

I like cats and I like rubbish jokes, so a cheap cat-based game loaded with ap-paw-ling cat puns sounded like an entertaining way to spend a few hours. I had low expectations but Cat Quest turned out to be way better than I imagined it would be. Once I got going I couldn't put it down. I played it solidly all weekend and finished everything in the game. It's well worth its current £9.99 price, and at the sale price of £3.29 that I paid it's an absolute bargain. Combat isn't too tricky, and even the dragons can be defeated almost every time once you've worked out a strategy. Loot and upgrades are a bit of a random number lottery, which is fine by me, but you can buy chests at the blacksmith's which provide a random upgrade to something in your inventory. I didn't find I had a problem collecting enough gold to keep my equipment up to scratch. Since you keep all the gear you find (there is a limited number of items in the game and you can collect them all) you never have to worry that you might have discarded the wrong item. You can equip gear to play as a magic or a melée fighter. Skills are learned by completing certain quests. Game saves (in case you die) are done by going to a town and having a quick catnap. It all seems to be pretty well thought out and I didn't encounter anything I found frustrating. The graphics are cute but aren't going to win any awards and I expect the game would run fine on just about any PC. I played with a Microsoft XBox game controller connected via USB. It worked perfectly. It's a pretty laid back game. You don't need lightning fast reflexes or pixel-perfect platforming skills. It might not suit everybody but I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone looking for some relaxing, cat-based fun.
