Not your modern sandbox.

This is not your modern sandbox style city builder, Caesar demands perfection. So expect a challenge is all i'm saying :) Requires careful planning, listen to your citizens needs and they (you) will flourish! If you're good enough :P I'm struggling but really enjoying it. If these graphics look cool to you and you feel like playing something like this than I recommend 100% it's a really well made and challenging 90's game. 4/5 from me.

Classical education

This one has aged very well, indeed. The graphics are low-res but the cartoony look still works very well. The little details that give you feedback--the granaries and warehouses filling up--work very well. There are of course some things that remind you you're playing a good Old game... the lack of zoom, and (in Vista at least) I can never get it to minimize to the desktop without crashing. But it's still enormously fun... The only bad thing I can say about it, is it makes me want to play Pharaoh, which (IMO) is just a bit more fun... So GOG better get Pharaoh soon!

Feel the Might of Rome

Review of the Original CD Release City Building is a dying breed of game, but if anything could get people interested in it. It would be this game. Planning a city seems simple, until fire strikes. Failed to build a hospital? Plague strikes! If your roads are poorly designed some people will never see a market woman and starve. There is a lot at work here, but if you put in the time to design a city well, you will be rewarded with great success. One mistake people often make is to directly compare it to Sim City. While similar in concept they differ widely in actuality. Caesar puts you much closer to the people and dealing with individual issue than Sim City does. Overall, if you like a city builder game, then get it for sure. If you have never played a city builder, give it a go. There are very few city builders better than this one!

Its a Great game, difficult but rewarding.. Also, changing the txt document to Give money instead of costing is great. A simple Must buy.. I spent many hours on this game as a kid.. I'm 31 now and still enjoy playing this game, so glad GOG has it..

Might be a classic, but brutally hard...

Caesar III is a Roman city-building simulator where you have to build the ideal Roman city using handfuls of buildings at your disposal. Build houses to give the settlers shelter, give them food, employment, entertainment, fire protection, water, and places of worship (lest the gods get angry with you), and provide government establishments to keep the plebs in line. On the surface it seems simple enough, but it's a circus. I was on the second campaign mission and the game just literally fell apart right before my eyes. The objective was to build farms so I could fill up a granary. Then I got messages to build reservoirs for water, fountains, markets, and all the while trying to provide prefectures and engineering stations to keep my buildings from catching on fire and falling down. Also the game kept telling me I didn't have enough workers to do all of the jobs that were in the city and then when I built more houses, the game kept telling me the workers were eating more food than was being produced, and I fit as many farms as I could into the small area they gave me to build farms in... Then since I was too preoccupied with building houses and farms, and wondering what else I needed to build, I forgot to build temples, so all of the gods started smiting me at once. Then new areas where I had built houses and other buildings started to catch fire since I was just rapidly placing houses down to try and get enough people to work my buildings... and it all just went downhill from there. This is the SECOND mission. I can't imagine how bad it's going to get further down the line... Play at your own peril...
