It is tricky, but it when you're walking that fine line between almost dying yet still making it through the game feels great and very rewarding. It certainly can be frustrating at times, but unlocking all levels by playing on the lowest difficulty and then replaying the ones you like on hard is good fun. Visuals are lofi but nicely detailed, I love the way the lighting is done and there is some delightful environmental storytelling, so they did great with the artstyle. While often you're playing too fast to notice these details, it will show it's beauty during replays or a rare moment of peace. I did not hit a wall with running out of ammo, but I would enjoy having more of it since it would allow for some more consistent rapid fire. The weapon selection is great and very impactful. Especially the railgun impresses me every time (you can overcharge it for instakill on some though enemies). The other game the developer made is also great and I would love to see a sequel to butcher.

Love the graphics, love the music, love the gameplay. It's pretty much what Doom would be if it were in 2D. However: The difficulty level is totally off. They are not exaggerating when they say that "The easiest mode is 'HARD'!". The game is just too difficult. Don't get me wrong, I quite like a challenge, and I used to play Doom and Quake in Hardcore mode back in the day - but this game literally had me do about an hour of retries to crack the first 3 levels (i.e. the first 3 levels after the demo levels)! This is boss level stuff. The version I got from GOG includes a new difficulty level called W.I.M.P., which apparently used to be DLC. Unfortunately though this difficulty level is WAY too easy. Playing on WIMP difficulty quadrupels the health point and reduces the reaction time of enemies by half - making the game no challenge AT ALL. Butcher really could be a great game with a difficulty between "Hard" and "WIMP". Just call it Normal FFS. I'm not 12 any more so I don't have the time or patience to replay every level like 50 times.

The style and gameplay is raw, brutal and just awsome. I bought this game after seeing the trailer, which really tickled my fancy. And as advertised, this game is HARD, but boy is it fun, especially if you finally beat a level after a night of swearing and tuning and tweaking your runs. Having insta-aim skills really helps and if you don't already have them, you're sure to get them after playing this game. 10/10 for sure.

although the game seems very fun, the fact that the number of "pixcels" don't scale with the resolution, and instead just get bigger, means that on a moniter running at 1440p, you can't see anything. everything is made of 4 shades of brown, 4 pixcels high, so it just looks like a big bowl of vomit moving arround. Normaly, i like pixcel art but in this one, you just can't see anything. the devs even included something to make it better by squishing the game into a minuscule window into the center of the screen, which means that to be able to distinguish stuff you have to transform your 27" moniter into a 6" one.

With better controls and much better feel overall While the backgrounds are well drawn and atmospheric, the sprites; like most complains here are too small (character and enemy sprites). Hard to see anything.
