Butcher

''Butcher'' should be simple to rate, and yet it gives me pause thinking about its design : a 2d side scrolling shoot'em up so simple and yet so fun! The main core element of the game is its gameplay : fast, simple and brutal, with a selected weapon choice and no checkpoints between its short levels, and the level design was constructed accordingly in this regard, which challenges the player with a few feature in order to keep the action fresh. Besides that, its story, soundtrack and bloody pixelated graphics are perfectly ripped (term which is perfect for this game) and blended together in order to give the game its devilish flavor. However, its simplicity is also the reason I'm giving it 3 stars : the game is fun to play for an hour or so before it start to become stale, and its graphic, although surprisingly good, are not well implemented with some part of the game like the background of the levels : sometimes on point, others a little monotone (and this without speaking of the enemies designs, which are not even worth mentioning). Anyway, Butcher is perfect for those who seek a moderate-high (from hard difficulty to those above it, casual doesn't count) level of challenge and a its a fun little game to be played in little chunks ( again, perfect term for this game).

!!! Warning - My review is based on my personal experience and opinion !!! I got this game for free. This game is like Doom and Termanitor's child, I you play as a cyborg, an ultimate sent to kill the rest of humanity. But, it won't be fucking easy tho, especially if you are playing in the "The Hardest" difficulty like I did! It's all 2D and with platforms, but executed in a good way, the levels make sense and are creative, with secret skulls to collect (collecting all the skulls and finishing the game will unlock the "Impossible" difficulty, but I won't try it, the game is allready hard as fuck). The enemies are many and varied, and sometimes environmental, from rifleman and flying flamethrower troops, to spider saws and lava pits. Killing the enemies is so satisfying, the weapons have a good "uff" to them each time you shoot, you have chainsaw, shotgun, assault rifle, flamethrower, grenade launcher and a fucking railgun! Did the game piss me off sometimes? Yes Did I enjoy it? Yes Do I recommend it? Yes 8.5 / 10 - "A good blood soaked game"

It's a nice little game, but you shouldn't expect getting a power trip from this game. You die insanely fast, have little ammo to spare and lots of enemies to dispatch. It is surpisingly tactical.

Tight controls, intense action, demanding level design, good sound direction, and very bloody. That said, it can be very difficult at times to do anything with competency when in the thick of it given how small all your targets are (think pixelated fly). On top of that, ammo cap is just pitifully low for such a game to the point where it isn't about what gun you CHOOSE, but rather what gun you have ammo left in. Lastly, the visuals, while very detailed, are easily obscured by many of the game effects and camera shake. Also, aside the point, very much a mindless slaughter game where you kill Humans for being Human, almost to a 'comical' degree that borders more on the sadistic - especially given the sound design. So if you want the slaughter, but not the 'Terminator/Killer Robot' variety, look elsewhere.

I nabbed this on sale because I loved Carrion so much. Unfortunately, while the gameplay is rock-solid, with easy-to-learn, tight controls; the character sprites are far too small for me to be able to see them clearly. Add on that most of the levels take place on a pallete of greys with ocassional splashes of primary colors, and I found my guy blending into the backgrounds too much. It's a shame, I really liked the idea of a Broforce for the ultra-hardcore crowd.
