Book of Demons is the first installment of Return 2 Games - a series of original mid-core titles, inspired by the early golden days of PC gaming.

Cards and Deckbuilding

It’s not a card game, but items, spells, and skills are all expressed as cards. The strategy lies in adapting your hand to each situation. Cards can be upgraded with runes and you can find many variants with diverse bonuses. Legendaries are the most epic but hard to acquire.

Tailored sessions with Flexiscope

Book of Demons respects your time. It features the Flexiscope engine which allows you to divide the game into sessions of any size. It even learns your pace of gaming and predicts the time to complete the next session.

Unique Mechanics

Simplified movement and fight mechanics is where Book of Demons differs the most from other hack & slash games. There is often not enough time to click-remove all of the obstacles such as monster shields, enemy spells, poison, or knocked cards, so timing, card selection and order of execution are critical.

Hack & Slash in the world of Paperverse

Book of Demons takes place in Paperverse, a world that exists entirely inside a pop-up book.
It’s a tale of good and evil about saving the world from the ultimate devilry. Sounds familiar? Inspired by the dark and gloomy atmosphere of the first Diablo game, Book of Demons is part tribute part parody of hack & slash classics.

Comfort of Gameplay

Many Book of Demons features were designed with gameplay comfort in mind. Points of interest are marked at the top of the screen and get revealed once you get closer. Your character leaves footprints, which can be used to track your way back or notice paths already visited without opening the map.

Challenging Endgame

On average it takes about 10 hours to complete the campaign with a single class, but maxing out a character and mastering all of the higher Freeplay difficulty levels and Quests takes much longer. The Roguelike mode offers another level of challenge with permadeath, restricted healing and even more obstacles to overcome.

Not a deckbuilder, barely an ARPG

Also, designed with its own game loader/store at the front end. Like Steam/GOG/Epic isn't enough of a front end, they need to load another like they're Ubisoft. Weird mechanics-- Warrior attacks from range. Everything is on rails-- you can't move around except on the path-- but the enemy can walk wherever. Majority of creatures have ranged skills. Difficulty scales badly imho. I feel churlish complaining when I got it as a free giveaway, but I'd recommend spending money on this. I'm uninstalling after less than 2 hours played.

Fun dungeon crawler with limited scope

Book of Demons is a nostalgic re-imagination of Diablo and other early dungeon crawlers, but highly innovative in its gameplay. The loot system AND gameplay/character progression is all rolled into a single overarching concept of collecting cards. Loot means new cards with new abilities to build and change your character. There is no skill tree - you use cards. This makes every new playthrough a nearly randomized experience in terms of character progression and how it defines the way you play the game. The same class can approach builds in different ways and many skills have synergy, a lot of that becoming apparent as you use them. The discovery of how skills are best used is what keeps the game fun throughout, as different (mixes) of enemy types will force new strategies. The scope is limited though - after a 2-3 playthroughs per class (there are 3 classes) you've seen most the game has to offer. What's left for you then is difficulty scaling. The game is priced appropriately and what you do get until it burns you out is a unique dungeon crawler that presents very well executed mechanics and good complexity even if it looks simple at first glance. Rating 4/5 because there is a lot of untapped potential here, and the end-game is lacking.

5 stars reviews........

..... may be common as muck upon GOG reviews overall, but I give them very rarely indeed. It has to be PERFECT to get five. This isn't perfect, so gets four. Don't get me wrong it is a lovely Diablo clone, but why add the bizarre mechanic of shackling the player onto a rail? By that I mean the fact you can only walk along set narrow paths - the enemy has no such restriction. The odd "paper" world where everything looks like it's a "paper foldee doll" is weird, and so is the system of using cards instead of proper weapons / inventory items as in the original Diablo. So called "powerful" magical and "legendary" cards are also extremely weak in their bonuses over their standard counterparts. In later stages the game decends into insanity levels of bullet and enemy hell! You can end up swarmed by HUNDREDS of enemies...... you have no chance! But the game is very good still - even better I caught it on a free offer! Also it still ain't immune from RETARD level DUMBFKING DUMBFK reviewers like "tetrarus". Piss off back to Steam reviewing mate.

Watered down Diablo

I didn't really enjoy playing this game. First of all the whole setting is taken from the first Diablo game. With fewer slots for equipment consumables and spells, it's a tough choice to make, with what to outfit your character. The alternative slots, somewhat mitigate this. The dungeon crawling part feels very slow, and the enemies swarming you can make it quite difficult to navigate. It can be quite challenging and I like that. The NPCs and the dialogues are terrible. There are no skill points available after leveling up..... The item enchantments feel a bit underwhelming, until you grind for levels and better quality gear, which is quite a drag, because the dungeon crawling is extremely tedious, and not very fun. I think there is something here though.... It is a nice idea, but the excecution was not very successful in my opinion.
