Description
Bombshell is an Action Shooter game in which bomb disposal technician turned mercenary for hire, Shelly "Bombshell" Harrison must strong-arm her way across 4 planets in an Unreal Engine-powered galactic adventure to rescue the president (and humanity) from an apocalyptic alien threat. With out-of-this-world enemies, a never-before-seen arsenal of devastating weaponry, and a host of genre-crossing mechanics -- Bombshell is set to blow you away!
  • History in the breaking - Be part of Bombshell's debut as she fights to save the president and her people from a maniac's mechanical monstrosity
  • Brave New Worlds - Traverse the dying world of Kyron as it's consumed by its neighboring sun, discover the secrets of a civilization frozen in time on the distant world of Zeroth and travel to the epitome of technology - a villain's vision which threatens to consume all that exists
  • Robot-armed and Dangerous - Shell, shock and shatter your way through vicious, bloodthirsty predators, an augmented alien species, and the remanants of an ancient race re-animated, with more than 10 weaponized arm modifications
  • Heavy Handed - Fierce finishing moves and interactive environments make Bombshell as dynamic as she is deadly
  • Isometric Ingenuity - Brilliantly brutal isometric shooting layered with classic role-playing mechanics, including experience points, upgrades, side quests, and non-linear levels. All with a twist of first-person shooter mechanics.

Insanely glitchy, but still fun

I can totally understand why people don't like this. The writing is mediocre at best, few of the voiced characters sound like they were voiced by actual voice actors (which wouldn't be so bad if some of the bad ones didn't give you side quests), the game is insanely glitchy (some secondary missions seem glitched out to the point they can't be completed), and the game isn't very well balanced (though, thankfully, it errs on making you too powerful rather than the other way around). Still, if you can look past that there are some great visuals, and the action I found to have enough of a kick to it to make it worth completing. If I were to make a suggestion to someone playing this new, it would be to not bother with secondary objectives unless they are on your way, as you can waste a lot of time trying to do something you can't even be sure is possible. My biggest disappointment would be that none of the bosses talk during the fight, not even in mid-fight cutscenes. This was especially weird with the final boss (who, BTW, I LOVE the visual design of), but I suppose given the quality of the writing it might have been for the best.

A surprisingly fun but flawed title

This game took me by surprise to be honest the gameplay tho very repetitive at time is alo of fun, the main character is quite likeable with her witty humour. If you like twin stick shooters with ARPG element you might enjoy this one. Sadly the main thing that lets this title down is the numourous bugs and glitches that I came across, wether that be getting stuck in the floor or parts of the enviroment just outright not functioning. This coupled with horric frame drops down into the low 20's in certain areas (thats down from 120 at that) It might be a seting I had enabled but I wasnt willing to go back and forth testing these. Just been warned these are th main issues this game presented to me. Apart from that its defo worth a picking up in a sale and giving it ago.

Ultimately mediocre

It shows that this started out as another Duke Nukem game. The weapons, the enemies, even good ol' Dr. Proton AKA Dr. Heskel is back and up to no good. Third person birds-eye-view, it looks and plays like an homage to the old side-scrolling jump&runs of the 90ies. Unfortunately Duke's replacement brings none of the good and all of the bad: Shelly gets stuck in obstacles, clipping errors, bland combat, camera angles cover enemies or the protagonist behind objects, at times you can't zoom out far enough to see what you are doing, controls are imprecise, auto-map errors, the game saves only at checkpoints, backtracking and more backtracking and much more backtracking. An example to demonstrate enemy-AI: Enemies that are out of screen (including bosses) don't initiate combat unless you approach them. However, your drone "Amiga" can leave your screen, doesn't trigger an attack, and thus may kill them with no resistance. When triggered, enemies basically always walk towards you in a more or less straight line cycling through the same types of attacks. Settings are unfortunately bland and repetitive, voice-acting is poor, story is weak, NPCs are static inmovable quest-givers, and the occasional one-liners are as predictable as they are forgetable. Unfortunately, Shelly as a character turned out to be bland and one-dimensional. She is just your standard "Yes Sir! No Sir! Tell me how high Sir!" type of woman that is so well-adapted you could probably use her as an universal cell-phone charger, while being as charming and funny as an army recruitment video on an infinite loop. All in all a disappointment that I can't recommend at full price. If you want to give it a try, wait for a sale.

Not bad, but could've been a lot better!

What can I say of this game? The protagonist is fun, although the humour is a bit silly at times. The guns aren't as satisfying as you'd expect if you're into classic shooter games. Models aren't always properly aligned (making the glory-kills a bit less exciting), and you can sometimes get stuck behind props (though this rarely happens). The plot revolves around aliens - led by evil cyborg Dr.Haskil - invading the Earth and kidnapping the US President. The protagonist - Shelly 'Bombshell' - has to save the day alongside the President's dad, who happens to be a big-shot general in the Global Defence Force, and the file-and-folder GDF troops. There are some plot twists and a few dramatic moments here and there, making the game a bit deeper than, say, any Duke Nukem title. Why did I mention Duke? Well, Bombshell was originally supposed to be his sidekick in some cancelled game. > Bombshell's campaign takes place across four or five worlds, each consisting of several levels and areas that transition in a more-or-less coherent fashion; they look beautiful, though platforming and backtracking can get tedious. > There are rpg elements involving various abilities and weapons that Shelly can learn/ obtain and improve as you progress through the game. > The cybernetic arm has an on-board AI that provides Shelly with intel and sometimes, funny commentary; it can also be used as a second protagonist to solve puzzles. > There are a couple of turret sections that work better than in, say, DNF. > Enemies are alright, if uninspired. > In typical Diablo fashion, you get various quests that you can complete for rewards; most of them are optional though. > There is also a challenge mode. The biggest annoyances I've had with this game are the awful camera and the weapons being bad - sometimes they miss point-blank, and they just don't provide that "umph!" even when fully upgraded. Overall, it's a fun game if you're undemanding, but not exactly worth the full price, I think.

A buggy yet serviceable shooter

I finally decided to play through Bombshell yet on a modern rig (RTX 2080) the framerate remains lackluster with all the bells and whistles enabled. Not exactly impressive considering that the game isn't very good looking by any standard. Then again - fun games are still fun games, right? Bomshell is an average shooter - straight forward and seldomly offering variation on the basic concept of shooting anything that moves. Bombshell navigates through sprawling maze-like levels, occasionally meeting up with human soldiers but par from this and a few jumping sequences it's non stop alien-killing. Is it fun? Well, kind of - when it works. On average difficulty, the game is a pure breeze in 90 % of the time but Bomshell is buggy with a capital B. I had to restart at least two levels due to progress-halting bugs and sometimes the weapons decides to stop doing damage to your numerous foes. The game offers a dozen weapons that can all be upgraded, except the bowling grenade-thing which just stopped me from upgrading after two levels - another bug I would assume. All in all - I could recommend Bombshell if you want braindead entertainment when the game is on sale. Don't expect too much though.
