The only major flaw is the title!

The first time I saw this game I was like "what the... is this a novel or something?". Fast forward many many years I finally decided to give it a try just because it was now free. And it quickly became clear that this was definitely one of the best adventure games I've ever played (after Monkey Island and Broken Sword). Very intriguing story, gripping atmosphere, clean interface, and hours of fun.

unexpectedly amusing

I just discovered GOG and decided to d/l this game so that I could see how the website's system worked. I did not quite know what to expect given that it was free. I was pleasently surprised to find Beneath a Steel Sky to be rather entertaining. The storyline is kind of so-so, but the dialogue is very amusing, as is the banter between the main character and his robot Joey. NPCs have interesting responses to situations, as does the main character himself. As a result, the game remains fascinating because you honestly never know who will say what or how NPCs will respond. Beneath a Steel Sky is good for a refreshing laugh if nothing else.

Hooked from start to finish.

I remember first playing this game on an Amiga 600, a total of 13 disks required and about 3 disk changes per load screen :) But even back then it was an enjoyable game with a great storyline. If you have never played it I would recommend to any point & click adventure fans.

Simply epic...

this game well deserves the rating of 5 being free and as good as it is, the designers nailed the point and click part of the game by having the character say things that might help whenever you select an object, and making a wrong move will result in death.

Starts very strong, finishes weak

This game had me hooked at the beginning with an excellent opening sequence and an exciting cutscene after your first solved puzzle, but the ending seemed rushed. The game occurs in four levels. On the top level, you're greeted with interesting puzzles and ideas (assembling your own robot and having him access areas you can't) and good humor ("routine inspection, eh? certainly sounds unusual to me!"). On the next level, the puzzles become less well-thought-out, but there's still some good humor especially involving elevator insurance. The ground floor is where things begin to fall apart. Puzzles require little imagination, characters are introduced that have no purpose, and there is a sequence thrown in for comedic relief only, except it's not funny. When you're underneath the city, you can practically feel the management at Revolution telling the programmers they're over budget and they need to finish the game. Getting to the final scene requires solving a very inane puzzle, and the final scene itself falls far short of the introduction. It reminded me of Watchmen, the graphic novel. Fantastic beginning, but the climax was just weird and somewhat uninteresting. Maybe I'll check out the Broken Sword games from this company now. Overall: 3 stars (in comparison with other games on this site) plus 1 star for being free
