So Close, Yet so Far
I was beyond excited when I learned we were getting a new turn-based Battletech game. Indeed, my first few hours with game were fantastic. Tactically managing mechs on the battlefield is a treat, and the between-mission gameplay was a great surprise for me (seriously, I never thought managing finances and repairs would be interesting). Unfortunately, there are some extremely frustrating bugs that simply make the game unplayable for me at this point. I hope these are patched in the future, and I will modify my review if/when they are fixed. Here's an example from my last attempt at a mission: 1. Enter mission. Everything goes fine for about an hour (yes, some missions are quite lengthy). Game crashes. 2. Restart game, realize that the last autosave is before the mission started... 3. Replay through mission, this time making sure to save periodically. 4. Camera gets stuck on terrain (this mission has terrain that makes managing the camera particularly frustrating. 5. Save and reload to free the camera. 6. Due to a camera quirk, send a mech inadvertantly running across the battlefield in front of an enemy mech where the pilot & mech then immediately gets one-shot. Fortunately, I've saved a new game a few turns prior to this. 7. Remove some of my old saves and reload my latest. This time the enemy mechs refuse to spawn. 8. Rage quit. Pros: - Excellent tactics and combat - Pilot and mech customization is fantastic - Crew management is cery well done Cons: - Bugs - The camera sometimes gets stuck on terrain, sometimes so badly that I was forced to save and reload. - The camera can be hard manuever, particularly when trying to rotate the view on certain planets.
