From original BATTLETECH/MechWarrior creator Jordan Weisman and the developers of the award-winning Shadowrun Returns series comes the next-generation of turn-based tactical 'Mech combat.
The year is 3025 and the galaxy is trapped in a cycle of perpetual war, fought by noble houses with enormous, mechanized combat vehicles called BattleMechs. Take command of your own mercenary outfit of 'Mechs and the MechWarriors that pilot them, struggling to stay afloat as you find yourself drawn into a brutal interstellar civil war. Upgrade your starfaring base of operations, negotiate mercenary contracts with feudal lords, repair and maintain your stable of aging BattleMechs, and execute devastating combat tactics to defeat your enemies on the battlefield.
COMMAND A SQUAD OF 'MECHS IN TURN-BASED COMBAT: Deploy over 30 BattleMechs in a wide variety of combinations. Use terrain, positioning, weapon selection and special abilities to outmaneuver and outplay your opponents.
MANAGE YOUR MERCENARY COMPANY: Recruit, customize, and develop unique MechWarriors. Improve and customize your dropship. As a Mercenary, travel a wide stretch of space, taking missions and managing your reputation with a variety of noble houses and local factions.
TAKE PART IN A DESPERATE CIVIL WAR: Immerse yourself in the story of a violently deposed ruler, waging a brutal war to take back her throne with the support of your ragtag mercenary company.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR 'MECHS: Use your MechLab to maintain and upgrade your units, replacing damaged weapon systems with battlefield salvage taken from fallen foes.
PVP MULTIPLAYER & SKIRMISH MODE: Customize a Lance of 'Mechs and MechWarriors to go head-to-head with your friends, compete against opponents online, or jump into single-player skirmish mode to test your strategies against the AI.
Please note:
3rd party Paradox account is needed to challenge other players in 1v1 multiplayer matches and to redeem unlock codes for Kickstarter Backer or Pre-Order DLC. Bonus decorations and emblems require online connection in order to be appliable.
Multiplayer and online play requires Paradox account. LAN play is not avaliable.
Gameplay also suffers from some classic turn based meta gaming problems.
Let's start by getting my scumminess out of the way:
I'm glad HBS isn't going to make another BT game. For the same reason I hope they never touch my other favorite IP: Shadowrun.
Much like they ruined Shadowrun by including tons of nonsensical gameplay choices that work in theory (real time stealth in a turn based game for example), they did a lot of the same to Battletech in the name of balance.
That mech line whose entire purpose is to lock down mechs with flamers and machine guns? Well, it can't do that, flamers have 3 shots per map now. That heavy mech you're chasing? Yep, it runs just as fast as your lightest light mech does at full sprint, and their pilot can sprint AND shoot. Oh, a vehicle on one side of the map spotted you? Prepare to get 'sensor locked' by a commando pilot that won't even be able to reach you for 5 or 6 turns.
Entire lines of the mechs included in the base game have no purpose other than to fuck you over if you choose a random career start. The store system makes no sense. The performance OF THE GAME ENGINE is ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS. I have like 5 mods installed just to play the game at an actual pace other than `go and have a smoke every time you hit enter`. AI processing? Animations? Random slowdowns for NO REASON? Yeah, they have multiple options to speed it all up, and none of them actually help beyond very specific slowdowns. You're still hitting them every. Single. Unit. You like your camera getting stolen? It's gonna get stolen, despite you turning off the options for that.
It's bad. I want to like it. I came back to it after letting the mod community percolate for a few years, and it's still awful. It's just a sad entry in the battletech lineup that could've been way better if the development team hadn't decided to rebalance a game that's already had 30+ years of balancing done to it (you boring clan gene-perverts aside), and, really, the only thing this iteration manages to do well is leak memory everywhere.
I haven't really been able to play the game much as it has Bluescreened my computer several times in a row.
Trying to get a refund -- avoid this one at all costs imo.
You will spend way more time waiting for this game to do stuff that you will making decisions. When it comes to the actual gameplay is bland and uninspired. I've had more fun with every other Battletech game I've played.
Lots of annoying UI decisions like putting important info on the target mechs when moving and limiting the zoom so that you can't see the info when engaging at long range. The indirect fire vs line of site indicator becomes almost indistinguishable at long range.
The moral and mech warrior system is also boring and not very interesting or fun. A poor man’s X-com ripoff.
The writing is also terrible. After the first few missions I stopped talking to the crew and just clicked through the missions.
