From original BATTLETECH/MechWarrior creator Jordan Weisman and the developers of the award-winning Shadowrun Returns series comes the next-generation of turn-based tactical 'Mech combat.
The year is 3025 and the galaxy is trapped in a cycle of perpetual war, fought by noble houses with enormous, mechanized combat vehicles called BattleMechs. Take command of your own mercenary outfit of 'Mechs and the MechWarriors that pilot them, struggling to stay afloat as you find yourself drawn into a brutal interstellar civil war. Upgrade your starfaring base of operations, negotiate mercenary contracts with feudal lords, repair and maintain your stable of aging BattleMechs, and execute devastating combat tactics to defeat your enemies on the battlefield.
COMMAND A SQUAD OF 'MECHS IN TURN-BASED COMBAT: Deploy over 30 BattleMechs in a wide variety of combinations. Use terrain, positioning, weapon selection and special abilities to outmaneuver and outplay your opponents.
MANAGE YOUR MERCENARY COMPANY: Recruit, customize, and develop unique MechWarriors. Improve and customize your dropship. As a Mercenary, travel a wide stretch of space, taking missions and managing your reputation with a variety of noble houses and local factions.
TAKE PART IN A DESPERATE CIVIL WAR: Immerse yourself in the story of a violently deposed ruler, waging a brutal war to take back her throne with the support of your ragtag mercenary company.
CUSTOMIZE YOUR 'MECHS: Use your MechLab to maintain and upgrade your units, replacing damaged weapon systems with battlefield salvage taken from fallen foes.
PVP MULTIPLAYER & SKIRMISH MODE: Customize a Lance of 'Mechs and MechWarriors to go head-to-head with your friends, compete against opponents online, or jump into single-player skirmish mode to test your strategies against the AI.
Please note:
3rd party Paradox account is needed to challenge other players in 1v1 multiplayer matches and to redeem unlock codes for Kickstarter Backer or Pre-Order DLC. Bonus decorations and emblems require online connection in order to be appliable.
While not a new game, Battletech still holds up against leaders in the genre. It offers a rich setting with plenty of variation in mission and unit design. Combat is satisfying & visceral and progression feels rewarding. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys turn based tactics games.
So, Battletech...
I love the lore and settings, so when a friend recommended me this game I thought I would try it
The good things I have to say about it :
Nothing to say about the graphics, as they're pretty decent and the mechs look amazing.
The story of the campaign is also pretty nice, and wonderfully embraces how morally grey the universe can be.
Now what do I have to reproach the game ? Game design, pretty much everything about it.
First thing, combat is RNG-based... EVERYTHING in said combat is RNG-based
You don't win because you're good at the game, but because you're LUCKY, that alone would be enough of a red-flag for me, but that's just the first issue.
In this game, you can only deploy 4 mechs per mission, no matter if you just start the campaign or if you're very late-game you can only bring 4 mechs
The AI doesn't have this limit
Just in rank 2 missions, you're fighting 2v1 (at best), and it only gets worse as you progress.
On top of that, the AI cheats and hard. Accuracy is basically a non-factor for it, you have no way of avoid damage while YOU have to find ways to bypass the AI's evasion stats
Combine the two, and basically 1/3 of the game's mechs (the light ones) are basically useless, as they just get killed instantly. No team composition, no team synergy, you just put the heaviest guys you have and pray RNG doesn't hate you too much
And it gets worse : all the main missions in the campaign are very poorly designed. Between escort missions, getting spawn-camped by 8 turrets right at the start of the mission or simply fighting 3 times your mech's numbers (and usually better mechs than yours as well), every main mission felt like a chore
Once the power-fantasy of big giant mechs fades away, all that's left is a grindy, very unfair game with horrible RNG
If you're a huge fan of the licence, you may find ways to appreciate this game, but if you're not I cannot recommend you try it. It's not good for your blood pressure
Ok, I tried. This game just bad. First horrible, optimization, everything lagging. I can't name save file! All interface is bad. Base development is just useless. Combat is pure random, I mean, bots just rush you, and you can do is hide under some rock and kill em one by one! They always overwhelms in pure power, but you can't use tactic, u have no tools! Just stretch em and focus fire one by one. And then some random head shot comes and you need 5 minuts to restart! Oh, and weapon balance, just forget it! Rockets so OP there is no point in any other types. Can't judge multiplayer, but singleplayer is very bad. Just don't touch this!
Devs had no idea what to actually make with this. You get 4 mechs and fight 32, 16% of randon generated missions are 2x-3x more challenging then the rating suggests which is supposed to be for "Immersion" but really its a copout to good game design as the missions in question will always be over powered so the idea that your just supposed to run instead of the mission being adequately balanced is tossed up to "lore reasons" as if the missions in question ever changed to be doable without being uptonned to try and compensate, looking at you Attack/defend base in particular. But reviewer wont mods help here? Nope. In fact mods can truly exacerbate things.
The game can be fun, but wait for a sale.
It's got mechs and a deep strategic turn-based combat. Whether you go on career mode or campaign, you will have to manage your mechs, choose, plan and execute your battles carefully as repair costs could quickly pile up. The greater the difficulty of the mission the greater the potential for a higher payoff. Some battles have hidden objectives, i.e. destroy all turrets. All missions give you a choice of what parts/equipment/weapon to salvage. Prior to the mission itself, you can opt to gain more options in the salvageable items (assuming you survive and you successfully completed a mission) or a higher payout. A third option exists: opting for a reputation gain in the faction providing the mission.
It also has some RPG elements: you can customize your mechwarriors '(battlemech pilots) skills. They gain experience as they participate in mission. There are random mini-story which could select mechwarriors experience points, new equipment, and/or mechwarrior status, e.g. low spirits, high spirits.
The RPG elements are not only confined to the mechwarriors, once you have access to a more permanent dropship, you can task your engineer to make upgrades.
Overall, this game is a deep, highly enjoyable game.
