SPECTACULAR GAME

I dont usually take the time to write reviews unless I really feel the game developer deserves it. Well, this is one of those rare occasions I feel they definitly do deserve a few minutes of my time to tell others how great of a game this is. First off, I'm only about 10-15 hours in. So maybe it all falls apart later, but so far i gotta say I'm super impressed, its just plain fun, the time totally disapears while your playing. The graphics are great, I love the style. The game seems to flow really well too, never seem to be lost or roaming endlessly. It keeps you with an objective. Which I fell is very important for an open world type game like this. The amount of possibilty in character creation and development is great. Its deep, lots of options. Lots of skills and professions to learn. The sounds and music are perfect, great ambience. Cant say enough good things so far. Considering I only spent a few dollars on sale for this game, I'd say it was one heck of a buy as I could see myself putting in hundreds of hours, yes I said hundreds. Multiple hundreds. For those who know nothing about this game imagine taking the turn based fighting style and character development of a baldurs gate. (minus controling multiple characters) then adding in a survival skills aspect where you manage your health, (eating and drinking, sickness, injurys etc) then mixing all that with Minecraft or Teraria. Thats Balrum Great job with this game.

Decent

It's not a bad game if you don't mind a slow paced old school rpg that's kinda light on the crunchy bits. Don't expect in depth skill trees, fast leveling, or quests that hold your hand with waypoints and such. I played an archer at first and while it has the advantage of kiting and doesn't really have resource management, your ammo supply gets tedious the further you go along. The good thing is that you can pile as many arrows as you want into the quiver slot. The bad thing is you'll spend a lot of time either gathering wood and iron to make them and/or buying them out from npc's. Don't go to wild on equipping arrows though as if you need to switch in some elemental arrows the regular ones will be split into stacks of 64 in your tool inventory. Speaking of inventory it's a little bothersome at times with the separate sections by type of item and the limited slots. At least there isn't encumberance. I dabbled with mage a bit but it looks like you'll have to swig mana potions on longer fights. So alchemy is probably a must there. But that's constrained by bottles which afaik can only be bought/found and not crafted. I bought this thinking I'd like that farming feature, but it ended up being kinda tedious imo. I was planting melons and pumkins for thirst/hunger and eventually added chickens and pigs as well. But it takes a fair amount of daylight everyday if you're going for max harvest. Eventually I slaughtered the animals and just stuck with growing my food. You can make a little bit of money with chickens but otherwise in the end it just got in the way of exploring/questing imo. Fyi, I'd check out the wiki and steam guides to get a little bit of direction but those will really only get you started. I'd be careful trying to be a jack of all trades as there is a finite amount of skillpoints afaik. Also be aware there are skill books that hidden here and there. They only work for a certain level. I.e. Class Skill Rank 2.

Skip, you cant pause the game

time keeps going, resources keep spending, this keep going, reading something? talking npcs? go fast, keep going, no time to think, you need to keep going. Just what I want in a game to skip it. Reasons behind this design decision is unreachable by mi mind.

better than expected

engages on many levels. The graphics and music create a mostly peaceful fantasy setting. Turn based combat has lots of options, some much better than others. Must learn how to be successful with each character build. Equipment has different attributes such that what works best for a warrior build will not be best for a spell-caster. Custom potions reflect the ingredients, e.g. you can create and name a potion that speeds you up, gains some health, and freezes nearby opponents, all at the same time. Foods can be created in a similar fashion. Custom potions and foods can be crafted quickly using your assigned names. Inventory holds many dozens of items and it's a good thing as there are lots of things to collect and use in crafting. Ores can be mined and smelted and forged into materials. Wheat can be planted, fertilized, watered, harvested, milled, turned into dough, and baked into bread. Well-fed farm animals generate babies. Wild animals can be tamed and assist in combat. Quests require meeting and conversing with NPCs who often can train, repair, sell, and buy. A map notes some locations and allows the player to add comments (on the map). Locations are varied enough to be interesting. Some important plants can be seen only at night. Save often - most any time outside of combat. Negatives? You will read other reviews. Some I don't understand. My all-time favorite game is a popular rogue-like with similar characteristics. In that game, I can easily create a character that can coast, or a character that will die quickly. I don't create those characters any more. There are exploits. I avoid them. Problem solved. This game gets hammered for similar characteristics. The game was updated so some older reviews may not be accurate. It's not perfect and it is not my favorite, but it is really fun. Balrum is the most underrated game that I've played.

Fantasy Life Simulator

Mine a mound or two, bake a cake, try to figure out why the carpenter doesn't accept the wood he requested and then think about how the pines actually look like, burn your precious bear steaks because you left them in the cauldron for too long, pick up some weird mushrooms and experiment in yielding a poison or a sleeping potion, go mayhem and shoot everything in sight, NPCs included, or maybe just go to explore a dungeon—but only after you've meticulously wattered and manured your mellon crops—with your trusty Jax the Sheppard Dog happily trodding by your side or dodging the heck out of skelleton's attacks while you stun them from behind and then hack them to pieces... that and MUCH MUCH MORE. Some say that there's not much to be had in the story's department, that it's grindy and slow. Yeah, that's all true. But in the best possible way. Eshalon and Terraria had a baby, and it grew, and grew, and grew, and ate everything. Fantasy life simulator by an absolute Chad the Madlad developer.
