Welcome home

So many reviews by butthurt gamergaters. Good god. Make no mistake, the game is great. Well-written, interesting, and like the original games, not afraid to stray into social commentary on occasion (funny how some people see that as a bad thing). The combat and general game structure feels a bit more like Icewind Dale than Baldur's Gate, but since it maintain's Baldur's Gate's rich story tradition, I can hardly consider that a downside. To this 18-year Baldur's Gate vet, Siege of Dragonspear feels like coming home.

Good fights, questionable main plot.

Should be 3.5 stars. I got a Steam key as a gift, but if I'd bought it for 20 bucks I wouldn't have regretted it despite some disappointments. The fights are good, on average better than the original BGs were. This has always been Beamdog's strong point, and they don't disappoint. There are maybe a few too many fights that can be solved by AoE attacks, but this is a minor concern. Really good boss fights. The companions range from okay to good with Schael Corwin, the Archer, being a definite highlight. Loot is nice, unlike in the original BGs you can safely use pretty much any weapon category. Side quests can be divided into involved dungeon crawls (good) and some mini quests (often generic fetch quests, kinda mediocre overall). There is nice reactivity with regards to quest resolutions. The main plot is where the game squanders its potential. It's promising, and the antagonist for most of the game, Caelar Argent, could be good, but she's not allowed to be, because Irenicus cameos take up so much time - Irenicus interacts far more with the main character than Caelar. The resolution feels rushed, and surprise, the villain is another old IE acquaintance. Also, some clarifications regarding complaints about the game pushing an SJW agenda and all that: They are ridiculous. It's safe to say that the game takes a stand, but it does so in the most low-key way imaginable. One particularly classy review here states that the transsexual cleric "blurts out a ludicrous sex change story [...] on first meeting". The character mentions that she was born a man but transitioned to a woman when you ask her about her name. That's it. One line of dialogue. That character is involved in multiple quests. Her trans identity never comes up again. Minsc's Gamergate reference is an easter egg line that I never heard throughout the entire campaign. All these people leaving 1 star reviews are looking to be offended, many probably haven't played the game, and none should be listened to.

I actually played it and it's fun

Siege of Dragonspear is being unfairly reviewed by some bigots. I'm giving the game 5 stars where it probably deserves 4, to help counter some of the negative reviews that aren't based on the game at all. First and foremost, I don't understand how the inclusion of a transgender NPC with an OPTIONAL dialogue is, as many reviewers put it, "shoving an agenda down my throat." Take off the tinfoil hats, people. There is no "agenda." It's one trans character. Get over it. I was glad to see Beamdog had the balls to include her, honestly. Second, let's talk about the actual game. Cons: The black outlines around the characters is a little ugly, but I got over it in about 30 seconds. There are a couple of non-game breaking bugs (this is why it deserves a 4). Pros: It's really fun. They got many of the same voice actors to come back and work on this title. Did I mention it's fun? Finally, get over the trans character. Or, don't talk to her. If you can't handle a trans character in a game... you're not going to like the future.

Wonderful exploration of old ideas.

Just love how they with the use of modern day memory can go back and build new content for such an "old engine" . And this is way more than just a fan-fiction. It's the real deal. Shows that everything doesn't have to be about the latest pixel shader, and that there is still some juice and corners left in decades old sript systems to explore aside from the Sword Coast itself that is.

Actually 4 stars, but see below

Long story short, there's a character who makes an offhanded remark that she's transgendered, and one of the creators made a remark about how the original Baldur's Gate was kind of sexist and how they were going to remedy that. They did so in a fairly hit or miss way, admittedly (by trying to build the character of characters who never really had any in the first place *because* they were sexist stereotypes to begin with), but apparently even marginal efforts to be inclusive and progressive are enough to send GamerGaters into an enormous bitch fit. So when you see people talking about it being "not Baldur's Gate" and "pushing a political agenda on you", what they mean is "one of the writers said something I don't like and I'm so terrified by transgendered people that a minor NPC offhandedly mentioning that they're trans is enough to send me into conniptions and give a perfectly serviceable game a one-star review. I'm playing on a mediocre computer at best and have had only a couple crashes, seen no real bugs to speak of except for a few graphical glitches, and basically find everything in the game to be at least "close enough". I'm happy to see people doing something with the Baldur's Gate licence enough that I'm willing to forgive a sketchy launch and some less-than-stellar writing at times. It's a shame that there are apparently so many gamers terrified and intimidated by the mere presence of a single minor NPC being transgendered and women doing the writing for one of their franchises that they have to abandon it completely to soothe their bruised egos. SoD isn't perfect, but it deserves better than a bunch of whiny self-persecuting GamerGaters crying about how Steam and Beamdog don't feel obligated to indulge their self-persecuting baby-d**ked screeching.
