A slog to get through

Only minor bugs, great artwork, level design, VA work and music. Unfortunately what really made the original games special was the writing, characters and stories, all of which are lacking in SoD. - The PC went from a relatively neutral personality in the originals, to being pompous and insufferable. Did every single line have to be a desperate attempt at wit? I frequently wished I could choose none of the dialogue options. - The "Hooded Man" went from one of the most awesome villains in any game to a creepy weird dude. - Aside from M'Khiin, who had a great premise, none of the new characters were compelling or interesting. - The quests were shallow and uncreative, including the main. The Temple of Bhaal was cool, but getting through most of the rest of this game was tedious. If you've never played Baldur's Gate before, skip this and go straight to BG2 for the original experience. If you're desperate for more, and you enjoyed the dialogue with the EE characters, then go for it. Personally, this felt more like a fan-made mod than a canonical entry to the series.

Let down by poor writing

I finally got around to buying the game for this year's annual playthrough of the original BG trilogy. I found myself enjoying the first half, but towards the end it dragged on. Some of the content was interesting enough, but overall the game is let down by poor writing and is padded out with bad side-quest design. On sale I feel like I just got my money's worth and I'm glad I bought it to satisfy my curiosity but I can't see myself playing through it again. Good: - Beautiful hand crafted scenes. The new Beamdog aesthetic looks out of place in the original games but stands on its own really well here. - Voice acting was mostly very well done. - Revisiting some parts of Baldur's gate was fun. OK: - The story is OK. It is very linear which is fine, but there's not a lot of depth to it, and some of the more intriguing aspects are not explored enough or explained at all. - Companions and their dialogues were enjoyable if a bit bland. Bad: - The writing was poor. Lots of exposition, and it really forces the narrative towards filling in the gaps between BG1 and 2 when it would have been more elegant to leave some things unsaid or hinted at. - There's not much room for nuance in your role play, choices are often limited to Good/Apathetic/Comically Evil and sometimes these choices result in the same dialogue being returned. - Too many side-quests are tiny fetch quests, either flesh them out into a narrative or remove them completely. Often these quests result in giving you rewards that are way out of proportion to the measly task you just undertook. - Itemisation is weird. After the low-magic gameplay of BG1, getting more magic items thrown at you than the start of BG2 feels strange. Many of the items don't feel like they fit lore-wise either.

Avoidable "Expansion"

So what did we all expect from a "sequel/prequel" made some 15 years later? Did the new Star Wars films teach us nothing! This was never going to be as good or half as good to fans of the original. Some basics...this is not an expansion on the main story; we learn no more about main character. It resolves none of the holes or flaws on the story or NPC characters. For example, we learn nothing as to why Safana goes from player in BG to hater in BG2. So many missed oportunities. The actual levels are not a real challenge for seasoned players. Some of the chapters feel like you can just breeze through. The way some of the areas are designed, it feels so much more restrictive and less open, such as Baldurs Gate city itself. The "romances" are a waste of time even trying to start. It has some good points, but they are so few. There are some interesting new NPCs. The interface is attractive and easy to use. The voices are great (actually enjoyed Neera fighting about Adoy!) Its not bad, but frankly its avoidable completely. But the original, top upon mods such as Dark Horizons and DSotSC and some of the third party NPCs and off you go!

Buggy as hell.

Was lucky to play for 20 mins before crashing. Avoid for now.

Failed to meet expectations

I really wish I could love this, because the opportunity to enter the world of Forgotten realms once more was so tempting. Unfortunately, this "product" failed to meet my expectations. The story is bland and the character development is unsatisfactory. They certainly should have stayed away from the timeless classic which is Baldur's Gate. Enchanced Editions were ok, but Beamdog failed to create faithful original content. I wouldn't mind to see a new RPG in the style of Baldur's Gate, but not from Beamdog.
