It's... Not the worst.

Now, I don't use mods on EE, so if you rely on them, check other reviews. Also this is well after patches, and *most* of the bugs seem to be fixed. It's not bad, but the linearity doesn't fit the Baldur's Gate series. Also there's so many NPCs that it's difficult to get around on some maps, which doubles down with the bug where PCs can stack on each other and get stuck - a bug that made it to BG2 EE somewhere along the line. Expect ToB-style huge packs of monsters, and for far too many things to heavily resist missile weapons or magic. Many battles are wars of attrition that just drag on. Suitable for big story points, not for as often as it happened. Getting (most of) the voice actors together again was a big plus at least. It's more verbose than it needs to be, but it's still one of the high points. Unfortunately some characters just act differently (Safana especially, but veterans of the series will notice the others being a little off). Giving a good-aligned answer got me into a battle, then I get remarks about slaughtering people like it was an option to not, which needless to say is annoying. After going through the early chapters a couple times with characters, I eventually just turned on story mode and burned through it to see the ending. It's hamfisted and only touches on the attempt to tie the series together. It's one of those products that would've been better received if it wasn't tied to a name that people expected better of. As it is, wait for a very good sale if you want it. Completionists can add it just to have it, or treat it like a DLC for more importable BG2 items. If neither of those options interest you, you can do without it and not miss anything of the overall story.

Tumblr esq writing feels out of place.

The mini expansion is supposed to bridge the events of BG 1 and 2, years ago other people attempted to do this. I think the fan made mods did a better job if only because they did not have the poor writing that Dragonspear suffers from. The new companions added are... obnoxious. They feel and act like every offended twitter/tumblr-person you may have encountered in the wild. They've added in characters who there just to fulfil a negative stereo-type for people to feel good about being angry about. The writers have entirely missed the point of fantasy-escapism from modern day problems and have simply inserted it in to satisfy themselves at the expense of the characterization of existing characters from BG1. Map design... isnt bad but is also clearly jarring when compared to the older art style which is disappointing. New items are extremely out of place, +1 to stats, +x if you're y class etc. I can't really reccomend this to anyone.

Conflicted, Dissapointed

Ugh... ok... so, I'm conflicted. I really, really wanted to like this game. I was so excited to play Dragonspear, because BG1 and BG2 were (and still are) two of my favorite games of all time. It kind of sucked though. I was disappointed. I was happy when it was over. Why did it suck? Honestly I have no clue. I can't tell you what was wrong with it. It just wasn't what I was expecting I guess. I didn't like the story at all. I want to forget the story and just pretend that my character did something else in between the events of BG1 and BG2 lol. It was also very linear, and basically just a chain of battles. The only reason I gave it 3 stars (instead of 2) is because I have so much respect and love for Beamdog for at least TRYING to create a new Baldur's Gate game, in the same game engine, 20 years later. I'm thankful for the experience, but I do not plan to ever re-play Dragonspear. Once was enough. My advice for you? Give it a try. Play it at least once. Maybe you will like it, maybe you won't. I think it at least deserves a try.

Not so affiliated with the saga

For me, there is too much fights that aren't very interesting. You keep your fighters slaughter everything and you use your cleric to heal them. The wizard is worseless except for using wands (lots of them) and the thief is a joke. When I choose Savana the scripts don't work. There are bugs, moments when you can't save the game and must restart from nearly the beginning of the scene. It's very disappointing because you feel the epic of the situation and it's well written. By far, I prefer Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. Very dispensable.

It just gets worse

I am still new to classic CRPGs, so chapters 7-10 felt quite fun to play, as it felt much easier than BG. However, as the game went on, the story got worse and it become more and more aparent that the developers didn't want the player to make a choice, as the response for dialog options often remains identical. I had some fun with this game, but it was greatly tarnished by the final 3 chapters. There is also the issue that as the game progresses, it gets more and more linear, which didn't work very well for me at as, as I would be expected to go through a combat gauntlet without the possibility to resurrect my party members for upwards of an hour.
