Conflicted, Dissapointed

Ugh... ok... so, I'm conflicted. I really, really wanted to like this game. I was so excited to play Dragonspear, because BG1 and BG2 were (and still are) two of my favorite games of all time. It kind of sucked though. I was disappointed. I was happy when it was over. Why did it suck? Honestly I have no clue. I can't tell you what was wrong with it. It just wasn't what I was expecting I guess. I didn't like the story at all. I want to forget the story and just pretend that my character did something else in between the events of BG1 and BG2 lol. It was also very linear, and basically just a chain of battles. The only reason I gave it 3 stars (instead of 2) is because I have so much respect and love for Beamdog for at least TRYING to create a new Baldur's Gate game, in the same game engine, 20 years later. I'm thankful for the experience, but I do not plan to ever re-play Dragonspear. Once was enough. My advice for you? Give it a try. Play it at least once. Maybe you will like it, maybe you won't. I think it at least deserves a try.

Not so affiliated with the saga

For me, there is too much fights that aren't very interesting. You keep your fighters slaughter everything and you use your cleric to heal them. The wizard is worseless except for using wands (lots of them) and the thief is a joke. When I choose Savana the scripts don't work. There are bugs, moments when you can't save the game and must restart from nearly the beginning of the scene. It's very disappointing because you feel the epic of the situation and it's well written. By far, I prefer Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. Very dispensable.

Beamdog, Baldurs Gate and Politics

Let's start this review by saying I am a huge Baldur's Gate fan, having fell in love with the series in my early childhood. Baldur's Gate defined what an RPG was to me, and all games I played after it were consciously or unconsciously compared to it. Fast forward to today. I have a wife, kids, a dog, and a house to take care of it. I don't have time to sit endlessly in front of my computer anymore, but I still have my moments, and MAN was I excited when I heard there was going to be more Baldur's Gate. However, after seeing and playing this expansion, I am totally and completely disappointed. Beamdog, you have failed Baldur's Gate fans, the series, the original devs, and most importantly yourself. There is a lot of controversy right now surrounding some very hamfisted fan fiction tier writing that has made it's way into the game. I don't really care about that, however the easiest solution is to simply fire the offending party, remove the out of place content, and everyone moves on. However, even if that had happened, I still couldn't recommend this game even to the most hardcore BG fans like myself. It is not a fun game. Not only is most of the characterization done at a 4th grade level (Literally, "X is a very Y person" kind of stuff") but they have butchered the personalities of pre-existing characters to suit their own predilections. And if you can make it past the truly abysmal writing, you arrive at the absolutely embarrassing number of bugs. Here are a few examples: 1. Casting any item creation spell removes all of my gear 2. Equipping all of your items, and then leaving the inventory screen causes your gear to be removed again 3. I can't seem to mouse-over 1/2 of the NPCs in the game 4. There is an after effect of the load screen visible within the terrain in all areas tested I could forgive the stupid political crap. I could forgive the writing. I cannot forgive the bugs in conjunction with the rest of it. My rating is a 1/5, do not buy this game.

Tumblr esq writing feels out of place.

The mini expansion is supposed to bridge the events of BG 1 and 2, years ago other people attempted to do this. I think the fan made mods did a better job if only because they did not have the poor writing that Dragonspear suffers from. The new companions added are... obnoxious. They feel and act like every offended twitter/tumblr-person you may have encountered in the wild. They've added in characters who there just to fulfil a negative stereo-type for people to feel good about being angry about. The writers have entirely missed the point of fantasy-escapism from modern day problems and have simply inserted it in to satisfy themselves at the expense of the characterization of existing characters from BG1. Map design... isnt bad but is also clearly jarring when compared to the older art style which is disappointing. New items are extremely out of place, +1 to stats, +x if you're y class etc. I can't really reccomend this to anyone.

Not bad

I remember the original controversies surrounding Siege of Dragonspear (SoD) but never got around playing it until now in 2021, and surprisingly found it enjoyable despite a few issues. Mechanically and gameplay-wise I found SoD fairly strong. The fights are challenging, there are tons of loot for your munchkin needs and there are a fair amount of side quests albeit sadly most of them are just simple fetch quests. As a dungeon crawler SoD is quite solid. The writing is more of a mixed bag. Writing and voice-acting for returning characters like Imoen, Minsc and certain a John Irenicus for example are quite fitting and they return with their original voice-actors. There are also some fun references to Forgotten Realms and other Infinity Engine games. As a downside, the setting and writing feels often times too modern and clashes with the atmosphere of other Baldur's Gate games. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 felt like they belonged in the Forgotten Realms and with all the 90's source books and modules, but Siege of Dragonspear feels detached from that mythology despite trying to pay lipservice to it. Also notably the villains of SoD are quite weak with poor motivations. Sure the villain of Baldur's Gate 1 was very cheesy and simple but at least his motivations were understandable. Overall I would recommend giving it a shot on a sale. Seeing and hearing the old characters again, and going through some good dungeons and fights is worth it in my opinion. Is Siege of Dragonspear a necessary addition to the saga? No. Is it fun to play at least once? Yes.
