New journey, old friends. I don’t know what possessed Beamdog to make Siege of Dragonspear an expansion to the original game, nor do I know what devil’s pact coerced them into making it thirty-odd hours long. It’s insanity.

Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear fills in some of what happens to the Child of Bhaal between saving Baldur’s Gate and saving your soul from Irenicus, and it’s a hoot to revisit this world, using the old D&D rules from the 1990s. But Siege of Dragonspear hints at more — a studio that’s done with just enhancing older games and ready to carve out a place among the top storytellers in the RPG sector. Beamdog’s first effort at original storytelling is a good start, and I’m excited to see more in the future, even if it’s in the world of Baldur’s Gate.

Fans blinded by nostalgia?

Decided to give this a try, despite ignoring the overwhelming negative reviews for this expansion, mainly because I was a fan of the original games from around 15 years ago. Suffice to say it was a disappointing experience. There was approximately 24 hours worth of gameplay, but I honestly cannot recall much of it, because it was boring and straight forward. No surprises and nothing that was challenging. Story line and writing are all over the place, with many loop holes. Writing seems to have been watered down in terms of quality. It was good seeing some old characters again, but more emphasis seems to have been placed on new NPCs which for the most part were extremely annoying and not what I wanted to see in an expansion of beloved game. Not worth investing time or money on this.

Dismal Mistake

When I learned there was going to be new content for Baldur’s Gate, I was excited and hopeful, as one might be seconds before tearing into a beautifully-wrapped Christmas present. Then the wrapping paper came off and I saw the steaming pile of cow excrement inside, and felt utterly betrayed. Beamdog released a buggy mess of an expansion. It has broken quests. Dialogue trees with NPCs glitch and force reloads. It has a broken Multiplayer feature. It has writing which reads like middle school fanfiction. The graphics are somehow *worse* than the 1998 originals. The occasional crashes which occur almost feel like the computer itself fleeing from this accursed program. Given the hideous way Beamdog has treated its customers in the days since the release, I have no hope that these issues will be addressed. Give this one a pass.

Unprofessionally done to the extreme!

Siege of Dragonspear is by no means befitting for the Baldur's Gate trilogy! It is simply put a very poor game and should be treated as such with no regard to the previous!

Carefully read the reviews - then decide

Is this more BG goodness? Yes, bottom line. Caveat: accompanied by non-game breaking glitches. Why, then, the low ratings? Well, read the one star reviews, and keep an eye out for complaints about the inclusion of something outside of good ol' fashioned men and women from the time when men was men and women was women. A pretty high correlation, no? (Including of course the reviews by players who really, I mean REALly, support all kinds of gender identity but can't stand for poor writing... which by a wacky coincidence just happens to be found in the character what people would be freaked out by if they weren't so darned open-minded. Weird!) So, forewarned is forearmed. If that's going to make you sad -- skip this one. If not, don't be misled into losing out on another chapter in this epic gaming saga.

Wish I never played this game

Honestly I would rather rate this game with 0 stars but whatever. I love BG series, one of the first games I've ever played and this is going to be the case unless something comparable or better than Witcher 3 comes out, but this is a blatant crime upon the series. No story, weird looking graphics for a game from 2016, stupid social justice insertions and so on. I would honestly love to get almost anything from BG 3 to Neverwinter Nights 3, some kind of DLC to old BG series...but not this. This is NOT what gaming industries need and this is definitely NOT what players want. The only pro for me from this "expansion" is that it's here on GoG DRM free. So if anyone wants to completely destroy their childhood memories and spend money on this, well feel free to do it but there are way better CRPGs out there than this one.
