As a fan Baldur's Gate, I was really looking forward to play this new DLC which extends the saga with a new story and explain what happened between BG1 and Bg2. It didn't expect anything great, the studio was different, some time passed since ToB, etc. The DLC is fair, new story, locations, equipment, characters and more. It was interesting to meet with some NPC that had a role in the main plot and beyond5that. Good. The weakest point of this DLC is the story - I don't complain about the linearity, it's OK for me, but I complain about the end... it was something I really didn't expect as a hero of Baldur's Gate. I think that it should have been done better. Because the story is why I love (and still play) Baldur's Gate.
Game is okay. Both sides are exaggerating as usual. Game was pretty buggy but most of it has been cleaned up. There is a SJW agenda evident in many parts of the game not just in one trans character. It is sometimes subtle, sometimes not, but it pervades almost the entire game. It was a mildly annoying feature that became increasingly annoying through sheer repetition beating one over the head. The gameplay was fine there were some fun battles and interesting places to discover but with very little experience gained and loot that does not carry over to bg2 the only reason to play this for me would be for a good story. With the agenda of the game making the story mildly annoying throughout, I have no desire to play this again. I was so excited for this, but was let down. I won't be purchasing from Beamdog again unless the quality improves and the agenda is at least toned down. Good first step is the SJW writers and fem freq backers have left the company, I'm not sure whether that means a change in direction though. They promised to actually expand the trans character's role in the game but that hasn't happened yet as far as i know. I will certainly wait until i see many reviews before i decide whether to buy anything in the future, b/c the hype from the company and their forums is heavily biased towards the company and the agenda.
if you want to play the balders gate series please for what ever you dont play this game unless you want a specific weapon in this game. Firstly the some of the characters where butchered like Minsc making him gay out of now where which comes off as super forced and they also added a trans character that you can't kill or you will lose everyone in the party including the evil characters (what the positive reviews dont tell you) nobody would be botherd by it if the character didn't mention it like it was their personality which comes off as bad character writing.
Secondly the DLC leaves more questions than awnsers when there doesnt need to. i have no problem with LGBT characters as long as they are written well like astarian for example when it is forced by companies or toxically like this game with its devs calling people phobes for disagreeing with the characters.
Lastely that this game has questionable desicions in the game that will affect good aligned characters which is the mini arena with the goblin character that passively calls you racist which is getting made to fight creatures to death which my good aligned character stopped which i recieved a moral decrease which means being evil which doesnt make sense since my cleric was one of mercy forgot the gods name. bg1 was semi linear but it gave you choices to go to places this game doesnt its totally linear. The devs really want you to like the antagonist but her characters comes off as cringy symperthetic villan.
this isnt a review bomb review i played the game because i was recommended it by a friend. funily enough it wasnt the politics and the toxic devs that made me dislike the dlc it was the writing was really bad. it just wasnt my cup of tea but others might enjoy it.
I just finished my first playthrough of Siege of Dragonspear when writing this. I don't get all the hate and bad reviews. It was a wonderful game, much more fleshed out than BG1 itself. You're in for a long game if you start up Siege of Dragonspear. If you view it as just an epilogue, you will be disappointed in how long it takes. It's not something that's quickly done before starting Shadows of Amn.
The story is linear, no free roaming like in BG1, but there's so many things going on. NPC's have more things to say than in BG1, almost all of it is voiced. The story is a side-track from the main storyline for a large part, but there's lots of foreshadowing of the events in BG2: Shadows of Amn. It fills in a lot of details to the motivations of the main protagonist in SoA and fills in the gaps of how 'you left Baldur's Gate under dark circumstances' (as the opening narrative of SoA goes) and end up captured in it's starting dungeon. There's even some links created with the Icewind Dale game.
The game is full of special items, a bit too full, but the plus side of it is, those items give you a real sense of power progression even though your level progression is little compared to Shadows of Amn (so you won't end up overpowered if you import to BG2).
What I liked less is the new art style of version 2.x of the new BG engine. To avoid the models being pixelated (the original models from the designers of the original BG1 were lost and Beamdog had to make do with the ingame sprites of the old BG1 when enhancing the engine), Beamdog chose for a blurry outlook that in my opinion, makes it look even worse.
Finally, all the fuss about the transgender character Mizhena is 'much ado about nothing'. She has only 1 line about it, the sub-quest she's involved in is not even related to her gender. Edwin's sex change in BG2 got much more attention and never got such a reaction.
Overall, this was a fun, involving and well fleshed-out inter-quel to the Baldur's Gate series.
