It is obvious that the developers really loved Fallout 1 & 2 and did their best to create something similar, only in Soviet Russia. Their influence shows really hard through the game, but it is more then a cheap knock-off. It is a homage to one of the greatest games, with Russian flavor. Come on, you can cure radiation by drinking vodka!
It is a good game. Combat is gun-oriented, so avoid melee or unarmed or something like that. Sometimes the game fails to explain themselves enough and lets you stumble in the dark to understand the mechanics. Also, some nice comfort features, like identifying quest-gives, no matter how much it breaks immersion for some or ability to use the world map to travel from anywhere in not-hostile locations and such.
Still, it is fun. It is immersive. And it is the first proper Fallout-like game in two decades. Much can be forgiven because of that.
There is so much to enjoy about the game:
- Setting
- Graphics
- Writing
- QoL-features like highlighting useable items, inventory screen which automatically includes companion inventory etc.
- Decent crafting system, but relies on save scumming
- Plenty of places to explore and fights to fight
The bad:
- Quest log is often nothing more than a list, with quest categorized under the wrong POI, not getting updated properly etc.
- Having to play vendor roulette by waiting 3 days to have a chance to get some decent armor/weapons and enough ammo
The worst:
- After the early game item progression just stops and you have to grind random world encounters for a RNG chance at money, armor and weapons to even be able to progress further: this isn't like Fallout 1 where you e.g. find the best energy weapon in the Plasma Rifle just in a locker in The Glow or purchase the best sniper rifle in the Hub with money you made natrually on the way there or in the Hub. In ATOM your item progression just stop at roughly the Hunting Rifle from Vault 15 in Fallout 1 and there is nothing but RNG and vendor roulette for item progression.
I made several attempts using unarmed, melee and ranged builds, but once early game is over and item progression just stops I hit a wall and leave immediately.
Such a shame.
Its actually a decent game...im having a blast with it.. some may think that its a bit...ZZZzzzzZZ because all you mainly do it get quest from XYZ go to XYZ kill or grab XYZ then run back to XYZ ....but i like it ? Plus you dont need a manual for it.. its literally... save on a regular basis multiple saves make sure you pick XYZ...1 part i will pick it is very brutal and not friendly when it comes to alot of fights...they will 100% outmatch you 99% of the time (hence why i said save alot and in different areas...so you can avoid or try again another way) all that aside its good.. i cant give it 5 but i can 4)
