Join the celebration! Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration takes you on an interactive journey through 50 years of video games.

At the heart of Atari 50 are the Interactive Timelines, which combine historical trivia, digital artifacts, over 60 minutes of new interviews, documentary footage, and playable games into one cohesive experience. When you encounter a game in the Timelines, you can immediately play it without losing your place.

The massive selection of over 100 games spans seven different platforms: Arcade, 2600, 5200, 7800, Atari 8-bit computers, and, for the first time ever on modern consoles, Atari Lynx and Jaguar! Play the classics like Tempest 2000, Asteroids, and Yars' Revenge, or dive into some deeper cuts.

Behind every game are the stories of Atari, what was happening at the company, and what went into the creation of the games and the hardware on which they ran, all told by the people who were there.

Also includes six new games:

  • Swordquest: AirWorld – Yes, you read that right: After nearly 40 years of waiting, the team at Digital Eclipse has created a new entry in the legendary Swordquest series, inspired by the design concepts of original Swordquest creator Tod Frye. Who will be the first to solve its mysteries – and finally complete the quest?
  • Haunted Houses – The original “survival horror” game for the Atari 2600 gets a modern 3D voxel-based sequel, featuring more houses, more spooky situations, and more urns.
  • VCTR-SCTR – This mashup celebration of the vector era of gaming combines the gameplay from Asteroids, Tempest, and other vector-based arcade classics into a single, continuous challenge.
  • Neo Breakout – An amazing and addictive two-player competition that combines the best features of Breakout and Pong, with a modern graphic style
  • Quadratank – The first new entry in the classic Tank series since 1978 combines features from the original games with four-player fun in team or free-for-all modes.
  • Yars’ Revenge Reimagined – The Atari 2600 masterpiece gets a whole new look. Swap between original and modern graphics at any time!

Please note that multiplayer is supported in local mode.

Awesome Collection For The Most Part!

I had an Atari 5200 when I was a kid, it wasn't actually mine it was abandoned by one of my uncles. I found it as a child in my grandmother's house and quickly figured out how to hook it up and play it. I had super breakout and centipede for the console. I am happy that both of those games are on this collection. Of course outside of a want for games I remember as a small child, the 2600 games are clearly the draw for most people and I agree they are very good. I have never been a big Atari guy but with this collection I have been able to very much so enjoy their consoles and games. I wasn't sure of buying this at first because I wasn't sure that I would play it much. I am happy to report that it is a favorite in my house. My wife and I find ourselves playing the various games quite a bit. I even enjoy tracking my personal best scores and trying to beat them. Yes the games are simple. Yes not all of them are 'winners', but I feel for the asking price it is worth it. I took one star off simply because It doesn't have some games on it I think of when I think Atari such as space invaders. Probably a rights issue there so not too big of an issue. Overall I am very excited to see Atari on the gog platform and I look forward to their next release. As a side note...the jaguar games shocked me a bit. I actually enjoyed a few of them beyond what I expected.

Smarter Than the Average Collection

Let's be honest here. More often than not Atari collections are a hard sell, usually bloated with primitive Atari 2600 games and a smattering of inferior arcade ports for Atari 5200. The only highlights are usually the typical selection of Atari arcade titles that still hold up today, like Tempest, Black Widow, Millipede, etc. Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration does little to shake up this usual game line-up, but it does recontextualize their inclusion. Instead of putting the games front and center, they're placed in a historical timeline of Atari that spans from its humble beginnings to its hubristic demise and beyond. Also included are instruction manuals, arcade flyers, interviews with former Atari employees and video game industry veterans, and more. Putting these games into their proper historical context elevates even the most primitive 2600 game from outdated junk to historical curio. A lot of praise needs to be given to Digital Eclipse for their flawless emulation as well. It's clear a lot of attention was given to the finer details of this collection. I especially appreciate the decision to give a more modern control scheme to Star Raiders for Atari 5200, the big standout for that system. Other system standouts include the ambitious Solaris for Atari 2600 and Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar. All this is to say that Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is far and away the best Atari game collection to date. Never has a collection shown more respect for the history of its game library. "Collection" may be underselling it. Here the term "Celebration" is indeed more apt.

Works on steam deck via heroic

Been hoping to get this on GOG along with the DLC. I am very pleased with what it is. I can understand everyone's frustration regarding the support and that's precisely why I waited until the DLCs dropped to purchase. I saw in the forums that people were having issues with the game not running after install. I installed on my steam deck with heroic and it works perfectly. I'm pretty sure it defaulted to proton GE 9.something or other. (I'm putting this here rather than the forum so people actually see it. I know I would find it useful) As for the game / documentary itself it's pretty awesome. Don't let it fool you into thinking that these Atari games are better than you remember... They're not lol, however the layout and the documentary material along with the all the other documentation is fantastic. Some of the games are genuinely good too. I don't think I get played black widow as a kid but it's a really fun rudimentary twin stick shooter. I sincerely love what digital eclipse has been doing and I am hoping to acquire all of these documentary style games.

Pricey history

I own the collection on the original PlayStation, plus Tempest 2000, my favorite, on PC, still playable. Yes, there's a lot of "extras", but the entire collection from the other platforms can be easily found with emulators all over the internet, along with Intellivision and other platforms. If you're a collector or a history buff, I suppose it's worth it, BUT, most of these pictures and videos are also available freely on other websites. You HAVE to review this as a game/game collection, and knowing what I have and have paid for on disc, it IS a bit pricey for what it is. A better price would be in the $15-25 range. After all, like has been said, some of these are the same game just a different platform, and really only a handful of the classics have stood the test of time. Factor in the many preloaded "consoles" with many of the same games that simply plug into your TV, for the same price or less, it's just not worth the current cost. Game wise, definitely five stars, price wise however, the value doesn't equal the cost. Two stars for being "close".
