Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.
While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

I might not get approval from many people but I find this game, to be among the most overrated games ever made. The background story is great, but the game itself feels like a job on a assembly chain in a manufacture ... the same thing 1000s of times over and over and over ...
This game has it all. Many flaws in the story (Characters are too prone to doing nothing when they should be provoked to action). Bugs out constantly. (I've had the game become unplayable twice and was forced to go through 5 minutes of unskippable cutscenes twice) Pointless tutorials. (Saboteur had better ties to the gameplay and was generally less painfull) This is one of those games where I just don't have the patience to accept the flaws long enough to see the good. If you play, do expect at least a wasted hour before anything interesting happens.
Game Length compared to the other AC's is short but will still take you a few weeks as a casual player. Its the most beautiful and fun of the Creeds. The story is full of mystery and sets up the other titles well. And the ending boss fight completely delivers, which is sadly lacking in today's games. The balance is perfect, just enough difficulty to keep your frustration level below your enjoyment level.
Since the game length was not as long as the others i felt this was the perfect blend of running around, doing basic quests and exploring the game world. In AC2 its more of a marathon and gets boring very quickly when the story just cant keep up with the monotonous demands of the game. Played casually AC2 is quite fun but not as rewarding is AC1 was with story movement.
AC1 started it all, its got mystery, it doesn't take itself to seriously, and the gameplay is amazing. There is enough fun mixed with lull points to keep you going, and it has the perfect length. The ending satisfies as well. If you can make it though painkiller then this will be a cakewalk :)
I've played the sequels before trying the game that started it all. You can see how far the series has progress in terms of it's gameplay mechanics.
Basically, you investigate areas with your GPS map and do mini-missions, like eavesdropping or interrogation in order to land the big fish. Then you can assassinate your target.
If you have already played the other AC games, I would recommend skipping this game.
