Description
Ashen is an open world co-op action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home.

Passive Co-Op Multiplayer
As you adventure through Ashen, you'll occasionally encounter other players in a massive open world, akin to the passive multiplayer of Journey. It's up to you to decide how to deal with them - fight together against evil, invite them into your party or simply ignore them.

Souls with a Twist
Ashen is faithful to the "souls" genre of stamina-based combat, introducing players to a punishing yet satisfyingly vast world. But here’s the twist - no two gameplay experiences are alike. Whether you’re exploring bogs, investigating a fjord or pillaging an old palace, where you are at any given moment will dramatically alter the course of your adventure. It's a brutal open world; you're just living in it.

Creatures + Combat
Ashen has no shortage of dangerous encounters, from hostile enemies to indigenous creatures. You'll be rewarded for studying the environment and its inhabitants, planning your adventure rather than flying by the seat of your pants. The flora and fauna within the world aren't just fantastical; they're often fatal. Each confrontation, no matter how trivial, has potentially dire consequences.

Crafting is Key
As you discover survivors, you'll have the choice to invite them to your Town. But these aren't mere adventurers - they're potential collaborators, bringing a plethora of crafting skills, from blacksmithing to foraging expertise, in tow.

Story + Score
Famed fantasy author Mark Lawrence (The Broken Empire trilogy) and renowned band Foreign Fields collaborated closely with the development team at A44 to craft a cohesive and unique narrative and sound.

A good but short Souls-Like

I got the game on Epic game store, and can't help but feel that this gained it a lot of ill will/hate because Epic exclusive la unches was quite a new trend back then and not a good trend. But that aside the game is good, plays well and runs well on my mid range pc (at 1080p), like with all souls-likes i recommend playing with a controller and you'll be fine. The co-op is said to be very good as well but I haven't tried it, but I do think this game is worth looking into if you're a fan of the genre and looking to fill out your collection a bit more. Or even if you are new to the genre. The base price is quite cheap and to me that justifies it being a bit short. It's also often on pretty good sales so why not? Is all I have to say. As you'd expect it's not as good as the Fromsoft games but it's still a good effort with a unique feeling atmosphere.

Souls? Great. Story? OK. Co-op um... eh

So far I've had a good time when I played this game when the dark souls fever game to me at a me in a fever pitch. It was amazing how the game is responsive when you wish to swing and the punishment/reward system when you roll, over extend, observe your enemy's attack pattern before you punish it works well for what the devs set out to do. The game artstyle works well and will be differnet from zone to zone. Deserts, Mountain ranges, Ruins of ancient civilisations and [insert standard super SUPER ancient city]. Tis great to take a few good screenshots of the zones. Enemies are varied enough, and not BS to deal with once you figured out their patterns. I have no problems with them but haven't played the game in a while due to how I'm busy playing random games in my library to make muh discounted purchases to go back to this on for an achievement run. Achievements seem simple enough to go through. Finish the main story, Collect a specific items, use all weapons and all that jazz. Perhaps perform a special things that will improve your hub area to show that you aren't alone in the game as you progress. Storywise, I remember something about the light and the dark being at ends with each other, but Can't remember what exactly what happened in it but You definately stop it somehow when you see it through the end. I think... (shrugs). The Co-op thing is required to get to areas and would works great, but unfortunately I did not encounter anyone online to see a new person fade in and out of my game and vice versa to make it work. Bright side you have a permenant NPC companion to help you out. They can be a meatshield and help you get to certain places just fine. Overall I find the game good enough to go through and is quite relaxing to go from one place to another. Get it on a deal and good luck on your adventures doing so.

Great souls-like gem!

Ashen is a great souls-like gem. Good story, visual, music and mechanics. It have the worst on-line coope I ever seen in a game, but work if you have patience.

Ashen on PC

No tutorial or game manual. No setup for mouse movement speed - hard to look around, or other common options. No zoom/overview. No guide/arrow/pointer. No quick-save or even save-game. Clumsy keyboard movement instead of click to move.
