Pretty, Mediocre Half-baked Co-op Souls
Having "Ashen" on the Epic Games Store, I must admit my disappointment when finding the "passive co-op multiplayer" to be very disappointing and when realising that the game is REALLY short. Firstly, and this is a strong FYI for anyone who is interested in playing this game with a friend: your friend will look like your AI companion based on your tracked quest and will join your game without any sign of notification from the game. This makes co-op really confusing in general. Leaving your game open to public players will allow any player to randomly possess your AI companion and go in-and-out of your game without their knowledge nor yours (so you may think your AI companion is broken as it walks in a completely opposite direction). If there is no player playing as the AI companion, then the AI will take charge, which is sadly very dumb and can get in your way a lot (and it tends to fall off cliffs, killing itself). Luckily, you can disable your AI companion to solo but you will need to annoyingly re-enable it again to open doors that need two persons to open. Secondly, "Ashen" has a pitiful length in comparison to every Souls game (and it plays like an unpolished Souls game): you can finish "Ashen" in less than 10 hours if you're an experienced Souls player, with only one notable dungeon worth mentioning (The Seat of the Matriarch, which is the only difficulty spike in the game and can be ridiculously easy if you turn up your brightness). Most of the difficulty in this game involves out-numbering you with enemies (since the game is designed for a co-op play) and in-dungeon darkness. Otherwise, aside from looking beautiful and having a fitting soundtrack, "Ashen" has nothing new to offer in terms of Souls gameplay. "Ashen" focuses too much on being artsy rather than a game. It is much cheaper on EGS than on GOG: with EGS's asking price, I would have rated this game 3/5, but - for $39.99 - I can't say that it's worth that. So buy it there if you want to try it.
