Description
The all consuming darkness has you battle-scarred submarine in a vice-like grip. As you navigate your sub through enemy waters, the only thing that protects you from a cold and premature death is six inches of solid steel. As if life itself, 5,700 metres below the ocean surface wasn’t difficult enough, the threat of impending conflict is about to challenge your very existence…

In the distance, a glimmer of light pierces the darkness and shock waves begin to roll your craft. An unknown object descends upon you. Systems indicate Torpedo! You act immediately to avoid destruction and lock your sights on the incoming torpedo. You release a Ripper missile and begin your descent, but you must go faster. DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!

The predecessor to the AquaNox series, Archimedean Dynasty is a submarine-simulation set in a post-apocalyptic world on the ocean floor. Assuming the role of mercenary, Emerald “Dead Eye” Flint, you must navigate the dangers that lurk below, including corrupt conglomerates, fanatical cults and cut-throat pirates. With a rich and atmospheric open-world, compelling narrative and dialogue interaction, and a deep customisation and combat system that rewards tactical thinking, Archimedean Dynasty is a submersive experience for nautical adventurers that like to talk the talk and sail the sail.
  • Over 60 deadly mission to get your heart racing!
  • Command 4 different ships and equip them from an impressive arsenal of over 30 lethal weapon systems!
  • Advanced AI puts your tactical fighting skills to the ultimate test when you engage in combat against extremely intelligent and cunning enemies!
  • Underwater motion simulation with drifting and currents to make you feel like you’re actually at the helm!
  • Stimulating storyline lets you interact with over 100 characters

So and so...

When I first saw this game I was very happy and started playing it immediately. The first hours were very fun and the nostalgia of playing Archimedean Dynasty as a kid made it even better. And then, when a certain type of enemy showed up the game brutally reminded me how frustrating and annoying some parts of this game really are. No mouse-control in combat means you either have to have a joystick (which I don't own) or try to chase frustratingly fast and bullet-spongy enemys for what feels like half of the game with your keyboard (which is again pretty frustrating due to the agility and maneuverabilty of said enemys). The fun of "exploring" other stations and places in Aqua and doing sidemissions to really feel like you are actually a mercenary also disappears at around that time since you will be left with only linear missions and other stations apart from the main hubs in each zone become almost obsolete. I love the world and the setting of Archimedean Dynasty but the combat system has not aged well and the second part of the game feels sadly considerably less fleshed out then the first.

Overrated and not as 6 DOF as expected

I bought the game after reading many comments praising it as THE part of the Aqua series. While I can see its potential, it is actually a weak game. In its vanilla state, some missions are unbeatable due to hidden timers which run out before you actually reach your destination and unbalanced weapons and hit points. The AD augmented mod by spekkio-kun fixes A LOT of bad mission design, balance issues and bugs and makes the game what it supposedly should have been. But even then it is average at best. While most missions of the first third of the game are a nice mixture of fast-paced shooting, strategic action and even a little bit of management simulation, it instantly becomes tedious after that which is a solid mood killer. About the 6 DOF: You can actually do unterwater loopings and go in all six directions but to make it a true 6 DOF game, I expect strafing and up/down movement to be part of controls instead of being limited to forward and backward movement with pitching and yawing. Sounds and graphics are outdated but still have their charm, no complaint about that. Positive things about the game: Music and especially the narrative. Music hits you with space type 1990's techno during missions, as catchy as it can get. Narrative was always interesting up to the point where I left the game once and for all. Luckily syncing was not a thing 20 years ago so there is no terrible voice acting runining the atmosphere. In contrast to successor games, AD appears to requires you to use all present game mechanics continuously, e.g. switching off your engine or using EMP weapons to fight certain enemies. This is actually satisfying as it improves gameplay. Given it is the oldest game of thee series and laid the foundation, I rate this as the second best in the Aqua series after AquaNox and before AquaNox2. Nevertheless I do not recommend Archimedean Dynasty as it requires heavy modifications to be in a playable state and even then is not very enjoyable.
