Description
The all consuming darkness has you battle-scarred submarine in a vice-like grip. As you navigate your sub through enemy waters, the only thing that protects you from a cold and premature death is six inches of solid steel. As if life itself, 5,700 metres below the ocean surface wasn’t difficult enough, the threat of impending conflict is about to challenge your very existence…

In the distance, a glimmer of light pierces the darkness and shock waves begin to roll your craft. An unknown object descends upon you. Systems indicate Torpedo! You act immediately to avoid destruction and lock your sights on the incoming torpedo. You release a Ripper missile and begin your descent, but you must go faster. DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!

The predecessor to the AquaNox series, Archimedean Dynasty is a submarine-simulation set in a post-apocalyptic world on the ocean floor. Assuming the role of mercenary, Emerald “Dead Eye” Flint, you must navigate the dangers that lurk below, including corrupt conglomerates, fanatical cults and cut-throat pirates. With a rich and atmospheric open-world, compelling narrative and dialogue interaction, and a deep customisation and combat system that rewards tactical thinking, Archimedean Dynasty is a submersive experience for nautical adventurers that like to talk the talk and sail the sail.

Initial impressions of GOG version

I've never played Archimedean Dynasty ('Schleichfahrt' in German) before. Just now I played the Gog version for a couple of missions. The atmosphere is pretty great. This is accomplished by a mix of rendered cutscenes with lots of voice-over from the main character, individual screens for underwater stations and their locations (similar to Wing Commander and Privateer), and missions embedded in a continuous story. The story is transported via extensive dialogues, which are not voiced however. The game world is unique, interesting and believable. It's got a real 1990's oldschool vibe. You play a mercenary who has to pay for his submarine himself, so in contrast to Wing Commander, you have a budget, earn money from missions, and upgrade your ship with better sonars, weapons and armor. In contrast to Privateer, you can't go where you want - you have to follow the storyline mission by mission. The 3D graphics are low-poly but impressive anyway. The combat is deliberately slower than in WC or Privateer, and the ocean floor landscape and the buildings play a role too. The vision range is a bit low. You have to follow ever-changing objectives transmitted via radio messages, which aren't voiced either. There are a lot of keybindings, check them with the 'h' key. The game supports (but doesn't require) a joystick. If you want to use more than 4 buttons on your controller, you'll have to bind them to keyboard keys with the Dosbox mapper (CTRL-F1). What I dislike is that like in other simulations of this kind, missions contain sequences of navigation points with scripted events and you can't save in a mission. So if you die in a later section of the mision, you need to replay the earlier sections, which can be pretty tedious because it's just busywork. Gog currently does not supply any manual, which is a pretty stunning flaw. Check the forum where a user has posted links to the manuals. The game originally used software rendering, and later offered a 3DFX mode, which is what Gog uses. On my PC the 3DFX mode doesn't work. I had to change the line 'ad3dfx.exe' to 'ad.exe' in the file 'dosbox_ad_single.conf' to get the game running in software mode. All in all, a big, serious, fun game that exemplifies the strengths of 1990's games.

Pure immersion!

This game, also known by it's german title "Schleichfahrt", never got the attention and appreciation it deserved when it was published in 1996. It's on par with games like Privateer and Wing Commander but at the same time very different and unique. Your character is Emerald „Dead-Eye“ Flint, a cold mercenary with his own submarine but an empty wallet. The game is very story driven but has a lot of RPG elements that give it an open world feeling. Basically it's a deep sea submarine simulator best played with a joystick. What makes this game unique and memorable for me is it's approach on real deep sea science and creating interesting factions in a pretty dark and dirty universe. The immersion the game can create is one of the deepest I ever got in a game. Using sound as a game mechanic can be the difference between life and dead, something you have to consider when buying torpedoes or scouting the area. Upgrading your submarine is important and satisfying, the system is very well designed and implemented, I dare to say it's one of the best I've ever seen. (Make sure to by a repair bot as soon as possible.) When the game was released it's graphics were top notch and could compete with every other simulation game. Even now, nearly 20 years later, it manages to give me this claustrophobic feeling of fighting in a mysterious and hostile environment. If you ask me "But what are the flaws?", I can tell you there is only one, there is no worthy successor.

Yes, finaly on GOG

One of the best games of all time. great post-apocalyptic atmosphere, intresting missions and dialog and a compelling story along with upgrading your ship make this game soo good. Even today with outdated graphics (which where stunning in 1996) you can play this pearl and actualy enjoy the graphic. The stations still look quite good, way better then the green menu from Aquanox and after some time even the graphic in missions looks ok an does it job. So too all who haven't played this Emerald yet now is your chance.

Top-notch classic game from germany!

I bought this game when it was release and spent hours playing it. The atmosphere, sounds, the thrilling fights and the story that surprises with cool characters are great. Some missions are really tough, but makeable. You get a better vehicle when you proceed the story further and you have the chance to trade between the stations (buy low, sell high) to make some money. Only a developer with passion should do a remake. Would be aweome to see "Dead-Eye" Flint's Succubus in Ultra HD graphics.

Always has a special place in my heart

One of the best games I have ever played. I played through this game 5 times. I discovered new things and missions everytime. It has an incredibly immersive and good atmosphere and the mission design is superb. Joystick recommened. If you can get over the (back than amazing) graphics, this game will give you an overwhelmingly good experience. I played the game in german and the writing and voice acting is superb, i cant vouch for the english translation.
